Another week in Year Two has just flown by! This week you celebrated interfaith week and children's mental health week 2025. It sure has been a busy one.
In English this week, you explored the non-fiction aspect of The Bog Baby story. On Monday, an exciting letter was delivered to your classroom, marked with S.O.B.B on the front. As you read the letter, you discovered that this stood for Save Our Bog Babies Society! The letter explained that the society had heard about your discovery of new Bog Babies and emphasised the importance of protecting their habitat. Alongside the letter, you found a set of instructions on how to create the perfect Bog Baby habitat. Throughout the week, you focused on instruction writing, learning about its key features. One of the most exciting lessons was discovering imperative verbs and understanding how they are used to give clear, direct commands in instructions. You all did a fantastic job applying these skills in your own writing!
In phonics and reading you have been reading your new stories whilst focusing on fluency and accuracy.
In maths this week, you wrapped up your money topic by learning how to give change from a certain amount using subtraction. You then applied all the skills you had learned to complete your end-of-unit quiz on money, carefully thinking about each question and using your knowledge to find the correct answers. After finishing money, you moved on to your new topic--multiplication! It was amazing to see how confident you already are with multiplication. In fact, you worked so quickly and accurately that you managed to complete four lessons in just two days! Your hard work and determination meant you were ready for an even bigger challenge--well done, Year Two! Keep up the fantastic effort!
In science this week, you reflected on your previous learning about habitats by writing sentences in your book. You explained what a habitat is and described the different animals and plants that might live there. After this, you moved on to your next lesson, where you explored microhabitats--smaller habitats found within larger ones, such as under a leaf or beneath a rock. To bring this learning to life, you ventured outside and investigated the microhabitats around our school. You had a great time searching for different mini beasts and discovering where they like to live. Fantastic work, Year Two!
In RE this week you celebrate interfaith week by looking at the hidden messages in stories from different faiths. You spoke about your favourite stories and some of the meanings behind those stories. You then thought about your favourite bible stories and their hidden messages. You were then taught about interfaith week and why we celebrate it. You listened to the story of the blind men and the elephant from the Hindu and Buddhist faith. You then listened to two stories from the Islamic faith about the prophet and the ant and the crying camel. You then answered questions and had a class discussion about the hidden messages behind all of the stories. Well done Year Two.
In computing this week, you worked in teams to create your own Bee-Bot mats! You collaborated brilliantly, choosing a theme that everyone in your group agreed on before selecting six pictures to include on your mat. We had a fantastic variety of designs, including space-themed mats, bear mats, and animal mats. You carefully drew and coloured your pictures, making sure your mat was ready for the next step. Next week, you will put your mats to the test by programming the Bee-Bots to navigate them--how exciting! Well done for your teamwork and creativity!
In art this week, you focused on primary and secondary colours. You discovered that the primary colours are blue, red, and yellow and cannot be made by mixing other colours. Then, you investigated what happens when you mix these primary colours together to create secondary colours. It was exciting to see the magic of colour mixing in action as you blended paints to make green, orange, and purple. You really enjoyed experimenting with different shades and seeing how new colours appeared--well done for your curiosity and creativity!
After a game of defend my friend, year 2 played a game similar to piggy in the middle where 4 children had to stand around a square marked on the playground and pass the ball to each other without letting the piggy in the middle of the square intercept the ball. They needed to move to a space as soon as they passed to keep the person in the middle moving and they successfully included some dummy shots to trick the piggy in the middle. To finish, they all practised dribbling a basketball, then they progressed to dribbling around some cones before taking shots at the hoop.
In music you continued to create your own music by being in a band.
This week, you celebrated Children's Mental Health Week 2025! On Friday, you came into school dressed in outfits that expressed who you are, and I absolutely loved seeing all of your wonderful choices. As part of the celebration, you completed an exciting activity called Islands of Personality, inspired by the film Inside Out. You discovered that, just like in the movie, our brains have different "islands" that represent memories, life experiences, and passions. You reflected on how some of your islands were similar to others, while some were completely unique to you. Later, you took part in a wellbeing activity, thinking about the things you like to think about and those you don't like to think about. It was a fantastic week of self-expression, reflection, and learning about mental health--well done, Year Two.
Well done my Year Two superstars for working so hard this week, we have got through so much learning. Homework has been emailed out on Friday and you went home with a maths sheet to complete.
I hope you all have a wonderful week,
Miss Haynes
