Happy Friday Team!
This week in English, we started with a surprise--a forest appeared in our classroom, along with some strange-looking creatures! We explored an illustration from the story, spotting nouns and adding adjectives to describe them. Before reading, we predicted what the story might be about, then listened to Where the Wild Things Are while Miss Willis read aloud. Acting out key moments made the story even more exciting, especially when we got to join in the "Wild Rumpus!" We also explored new vocabulary, discussed word meanings, created sentences, and played a fun guessing game by acting out different scenes.
In Math this week, we focused on subtraction, practicing counting back and finding the difference. We worked on identifying number sentences and explored fact families, always remembering that subtraction starts with the biggest number. Fact families helped us see how the same three numbers can be used in different ways. We spent lots of time working through problems, making sure we understood each step and built our confidence with subtraction!
During Health and Safety Week, we had a visit from PC Nick, who taught us how and when to call 999 and explained the different emergency services. We loved watching Lookout Lion and became hazard detectives, learning to spot dangers and understand what hazards are. We also learned about First Aiders, found out who they are at school, and explored what's inside a first aid kit. To finish, we drew and labeled the important items in a first aid kit, making sure we knew how they are used to help people.
In our Music lesson this week, we took on a fun challenge--passing a single clap down the line without clapping too early or too late! It took a few tries, but with great listening and teamwork, we managed to do it in just 15 seconds. Well done, Year 1! After that, we listened to this week's song, Days of the Week, and were surprised to hear the days sung in Spanish. It was exciting to learn a new way to sing along!
In PE this week, we worked on our invasion game skills, focusing on throwing, dodging, and catching. We improved our aim and throwing distance by refining our technique, practicing with different objects, and trying to land them in hoops. Working in pairs, we encouraged each other and gave feedback to improve our throws. We also started our dance unit with an animal theme! First, we created a mind map of our favourite animals, then experimented with different movements to match them. Finally, we chose four moves to begin our group dance to music from The Jungle Book!
In computing this week, we explored data and how labels help us organise information. We started by discussing different objects and their labels, learning that labels make it easier to find things. We then searched around the classroom for real-life labels before sorting objects into groups and giving each group a clear label. This helped us understand how data can be categorised and organised in a useful way!
In RE this week, we started our new topic with a nature walk, looking for signs of spring. We spotted buds, stems, and even a little ladybird! After writing about our favorite signs of spring, we learned about the Holy Week of Easter, focusing on Palm Sunday. We acted out the story outside, laying our coats on the floor, waving palm leaves, and excitedly shouting, "Hosanna!" But there were also some grumpy people who didn't want Jesus in Jerusalem! We had so much fun playing different roles and bringing the story to life.
Everyone has worked super hard this week and they should be really proud of themsleves. Have a lovely weekend everyone!
