Reception Class, what a fantastic first week! This week for us has been about settling into the rhythms and routines of the school day, making new friends and familiarising ourselves with our classroom, which you have all done so brilliantly.
Across the week, we have enjoyed listening to many stories from our reading challenge basket and singing lots of familiar nursery rhymes. We even added some instruments to liven it up a bit. So we were definitely ready to take participate in a rock band session with Jacob from Rock Steady. We learned all about the different instruments that can be played in a rock band, some of us even got to take on band roles. It was very exciting!
Wellbeing is very important for a healthy mind, so in our firstwellbeing session we discussed the things we love and why they make us happy. Reception Class, your families will be pleased to hear that they are the things you love the most. Using our hand to regulate inward and outward breaths, we learnt a calming breathing technique that we can use when we may feel a little sad or upset whilst thinking about what makes us happy.
We were very excited to have our first PE lesson on Thursday, exploring dance. Before we began we quickly discussed how our bodies work and that before we do any exercise it is important to warm up our muscles and prepare our hearts to work harder. We thought about what dance is and how we move our bodies in time to the music. We started with a familiar action song and then tried it at a faster then slower pace. We understood that we could change our movements to match the speed of the music. We had great fun with the fast songs. We certainly earned a cool drink in our cool down. Great work Reception Class.
As part of getting to know each other this week, we explored what a self-portrait was and used mirrors to observe and discuss our features, noticing that we are all wonderfully different and unique. After completing our drawing of ourselves, we took time to discuss some of our distinguishing features like eye colour, the colour of our skin and hair and tried to add that detail when it came to painting them. Whilst we have not completed them all yet, they look great so far.
This afternoon we also got to meet and spend some time with our Year 6 buddies in our class garden. Year 6 shared some of their wonderful memories from their time in Reception Class with their buddies, so I know they will do a fantastic job of being great buddies to us.
Although we haven't joined the rest of the school in worship this week, we have learnt about why we have a lighthouse in our classroom and why we light a candle to light the spark for a love of learning and of life.
Reception Class, you have certainly shone your lights this week!
Have a super weekend, get some rest and we will see you again on Monday
