This week in Reception we have been thinking about how we can shine our lights brightly through our learning, our words and our actions.
Literacy: This week we explored a story that reminded us of The Something. It rhymed and even had a brilliant story song to help us remember the characters, setting and plot. We learnt about the four parts of the story and then had a go at writing some of our own accurate sentences. We made sure to start with a capital letter, used our Fred fingers to sound out words, carefully formed the letters we already know, and finished with a full stop. We were very proud to read back our sentences to check they made sense.
Language and Communication: At the end of the week, we wrapped up warm in our coats and braved the wind and rain for a very wintry adventure. We explored all the leaves blowing down from the trees, noticed their different sizes, and admired their beautiful autumnal colours. We made a fantastic collection of leaves, ready to use for some leaf art next week.
Mathematics: In maths, we explored measurement through height and length. When looking at height, we made direct comparisons to decide whether objects were taller or shorter than each other. For length, we laid things out from a starting point and compared to see what was longer or shorter. We loved testing out our ideas with lots of different objects.
Personal, Social and Emotional Development: In wellbeing time we thought about the things that sometimes annoy us and why. We discussed the different wellbeing strategies we have learnt so far and which ones might help us in these moments. We all agreed that calm breathing using our hands was a brilliant one to use when we feel cross or frustrated.
Understanding the World: This week we learnt about the important work of a food bank. We discovered that there are food banks in both Nantwich and Crewe that help people in our communities by giving much-needed food parcels. We watched a short video clip showing the food that is collected and how parcels are made up. As part of our social justice project, Reception are organising a harvest collection for the Nantwich Foodbank. We even made a post for the website sharing which items are most needed. We are amazed already by the generous donations coming in and want to say a huge thank you to everyone who has helped us so far.
Physical Development: In PE we continued our sessions themed around Bertie Bunny and his friends. After collecting lots of carrots from the farmer's field, we celebrated with the carrot dance! We ran around the field moving beanbags from hoop to hoop, practiced our underarm throws, and learnt how pointing our finger helps us aim and direct the beanbag into another hoop.
Expressive Arts and Design: We have finally completed all of our self-portraits to create our very own Reception Wall of Fame! We loved looking at each other's portraits and gave lots of compliments for the wonderful painterly effort. They look amazing.
This week we have shone our lights brightly through our kindness, our learning and our creativity. What a wonderful way to finish our week together!
