Our Week of Learning and Discovery

Welcome back Reception Class, it may have been a shorter week but we have packed it full of learning and discovery. Here's what we have been up to.

Physical Development
This week with Coach Gabriel, we continued to develop our physical skills and teamwork. We worked on our coordination, movement, and strength while having lots of fun.

Literacy Development & Language and Communication Development
We were very excited to begin exploring our new story, Little Red, which is linked to our topic on traditional tales. We learned that traditional tales are stories that have been passed down in families for many years and are often set in the countryside, as people traditionally worked on the land. We loved that Little Red is a more modern version of Little Red Riding Hood and have enjoyed learning the story song to help us sequence the events. We explored new vocabulary and checked our understanding by answering comprehension questions. We also practiced and refined our writing skills by completing sentence accuracy activities.

Mathematical Development
This week, we recapped and consolidated our learning about measurement, making sure we have a secure understanding of longer and shorter, heavier and lighter, and full and empty. Next week, we will begin learning about number bonds to 10.

Expressive Arts & Design
Our music lesson started with listening to Lovely Day, performed by Bill Withers. We all really enjoyed the song. As soon as it started, we smiled because it made us feel joyful and think about spending a lovely day with our families. Some of us had heard the song before on the radio or TV. We listened carefully and identified different instruments, including the guitar, drums with a cymbal, vocals, a violin, and a piano. Afterwards, we sang Old MacDonald and Wheels on the Bus, joining in with both the singing and actions.

Understanding the World
This week, we joined the rest of the school in Health & Safety Week and explored what first aid is. We learned how to use a medical wipe and how to put a plaster on one of our class teddies. We discussed what we should do if we see someone hurt on the playground and learned that we should go and get an adult to help and offer emotional support by comforting them.

In RE, we began our new concept for this term--Easter. We explored our key enquiry question: Why do Christians think Easter is all about love? We listened to the story Guess How Much I Love You by Sam McBratney and thought about what love is, where we see love, who we love, and who loves us. We were very excited to see Clever Cub, our RE bear, who told us all about the Easter story, starting with The Great Parade, followed by The Important Meal, then The Sad, Dreadful Day, and finally The Happy Day. We noticed that, just like our literacy story, the Easter story had four parts. Next week, we will begin to construct our own Easter garden, which we are very excited about!

Personal, Social & Emotional Development
In HeartSmart, we learned about being super friends. We started by recapping what superheroes do from our learning last term. Then, we discussed who our favourite superhero is and what we like about them. Boris reminded us that we all have HeartSmart superpowers because we are super friends. We took turns to think about and share our super friendship powers.

Boris says, "We are all super friends." We also read a special Bible verse: "Friends always show their love." – Proverbs 17:17.

For wellbeing, our question of the week was, "If I ruled the world, I would..." We started by talking about who rules the world. We had some great ideas, including Mrs. Chesters, mummies and daddies, God, the King, and the President. We found out that there isn't just one person who rules the whole world, but each country has leaders who are responsible for looking after people, making rules, and guiding their country.

We then talked with our partners about what we would do if we ruled the world. Some of our amazing ideas were making the world a safe place so that nobody gets hurt, making sure everyone is happy, ensuring nobody is poorly, and, for one of us, staying in bed all day!

For our well-being activity, we hugged a pillow, person, tree, or toy. This made us feel happy, safe, and loved.

This has been another wonderful week of learning, and we can't wait to see what new adventures next week will bring!

Have a great weekend
