What a busy and fun filled week we've had in Reception Class! There's been so much to learn and enjoy. Let us share some of our favourite moments with you
This week in PSED and Wellbeing, we discussed how good friends always make sure that no one is left out and that everyone feels included. To demonstrate this, we played a game called Musical Friends. At first, we danced alone while the music played, but when it stopped, we found a partner to dance with. Each time the music paused, we joined another partnership, making our group bigger and bigger until we included everyone in the class. Boris reminds us: "Good friends always make sure everyone is included." Our Bible link for this lesson was: "Do not look out for yourselves. Look out for the good of others also." – 1 Corinthians 10:24.
In our well-being this week we talked about our emotions, we know that emotions are a way to describe how we are feeling. We thought of lots of different emotions, happy, sad, worried, bored, disappointed, excited and shocked to name a few. We thought about how some emotions are good emotions and we like to feel that way, like being happy or excited, and others are feelings that are okay to feel but we don't really like to feel that way, like anger and sadness. We talked about what situations might make us feel certain emotions and what we do when we feel happy emotions. We also thought about what we can do to help if we are feeling an emotion that doesn't feel good, ask an adult for help, have a cuddle, talk to a friend.
Our well-being activity was to imagine ourselves doing a calm activity, such as walking on the beach, floating on a cloud or relaxing at home.
In Literacy Development, we continued working on our story Little Red as the focus for our writing. We discussed how the story is structured into four parts and explored the key elements that make a good story. We also looked at different ways to start a sentence and how describing words can make characters and events more interesting. In our writing activities, we created lists of descriptive words for the characters and setting and then used them to make our sentences more engaging for the reader.
In Understanding the World, we continued our Questful journey in RE to discover why Christians believe the Easter story is all about love. We began by rereading last week's story to recap our knowledge and understanding before sequencing the key events using pictures. One of the most memorable activities this week was washing each other's feet, just as Jesus did for his disciples. We discussed how the disciples might have felt when Jesus performed this act and why he did it for them. We also reflected on Jesus praying in the Garden of Gethsemane and wrote our own prayers on flowers to create a beautiful prayer garden.
In Maths, we explored number bonds to ten using a variety of representations. We started by using concrete objects, then moved on to pictorial representations with counters, and finally used ten frames to visualize all the number bonds to ten. We practiced using mathematical language such as "altogether" to describe how many we had in total. We also answered "how many more" questions to work out how many counters were needed to make ten from a given number. One of our favorite activities was singing Ten Green Bottles and adapting the song to count how many bottles were left on the wall and how many had fallen. We then turned these into number sentences, for example: "There are three on the wall and seven on the floor. Three and seven make ten altogether."
In PE, we continued developing our throwing skills with Coach Gabe. We worked on improving our aim by bouncing balls into hoops and throwing at targets.
On Thursday, we celebrated World Book Day! We had a fantastic time listening to some of our favourite and familiar stories. We also enjoyed experiencing stories in a different way through Musical Storyland with the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, which retold Jack and the Beanstalk and Anansi and the Monkeys through music. We joined in with some of the refrains and loved discussing how the storytelling was different from the usual way we hear stories. We shared our favorite parts and explained why we liked them. To mark the occasion, we also enjoyed dressing up as our favorite book characters, creating beautiful book cover pictures of them, and making special bookmarks for our reading books.
In Expressive Arts and Design, our provision time was all about making a for Red Riding Hood's grandma! We explored different ways to create cakes using paper and card, which involved lots of problem-solving and critical thinking as we experimented with making cylinders. We had some fantastic ideas, and red velvet and chocolate cakes seemed to be the most popular choices. Using our craft materials, we decorated our cakes beautifully, and some of us even got adventurous by designing and building a two-tier cake!
In our music session, we really enjoyed listening to "Beyond The Sea" sung by Robbie Williams. We listened really carefully to the music and tried to name the instruments that we could hear, we heard a lot of different instruments including, a tambourine, maracas, a piano, trumpets, a flute.
Next we talked about keeping the beat, we used different ways to keep the beat, including; clapping, marching and waving our arms. We know that sometimes a beat is fast and sometimes it is slow. We played a game where we listened to a beat and then copied it.Finally we chose some of our favourite nursery rhymes to sing, we chose, Old Macdonald Had a Farm, Twinkle Twinkle, Wind the Bobbin Up and If you're happy and you know it.
It has been another wonderful week full of creativity, learning, and new experiences!
