This week, we had a strong geography focus in our learning as our book "The Storm Whale" sparked our curiosity about where does sea water come from and the difference between an ocean and a sea.
In Understanding the World, we explored different maps and globes, identifying that water is coloured blue and land is green. We learned that Great Britain is an island country surrounded by the sea. We observed that there was more water on the globe than land so we understood that that our world is made up of large areas of water called oceans.
In thinking about our big question, Zac explained that rain falls from the sky and runs into the seas as part of the water cycle. After rummaging in the cupboard we found the water cycle experiment and set it up in class to see if this theory was correct. We filled the sea section with water and set a heat lamp over it. Under the cloud we placed some ice cubes and then waited. And waited! And waited! Finally, after the lamp heated up the sea water it evaporated, forming condensation under the cloud, which then turned to small droplets of rain and trickled down the mountain area in streams and rivers to the sea. Excited doesn't begin to explain how we felt when we had made rain that flowed into the sea! It was lovely to invite anyone passing our room to come and take a look. Well done Zac for asking such great questions and sharing ideas for our learning.
For Expressive Arts and Design, we explored making different seascapes using hues of green and blue, and a range of mixed media to create moody night time seascapes similar to those illustrated in The Storm Whale.' They looked fabulous Reception Class.
In Literacy Development, we finally completed our last write-up of "The Storm Whale" with our Ending Elephant section. Reception Class, the standard of writing is amazing! Well done everyone, we are writers!
In Personal, Social, and Emotional Development, we loved listening to our visitor, Brian, as he explained how to grow a positive mindset with his friend NED, which stands for Never give up, Encourage each other, and Do your best. He performed some fantastic yo-yo tricks, which we loved.
In our wellbeing session, we made a rainbow filled with all the things we thought our new teacher for September would need to know about us. I think she is going to be very surprised with some of the things we love to do when we are not at school.
For Physical Development, Coach James continued with playground games, reminding us to be team players, play fairly, and follow the game rules.
