What a joyful and exciting week we've had in Reception Class!
As we move closer to the end of our Reception journey, we've been taking some big steps forward and having lots of fun along the way.
This week, we spent time in the Year 1 classroom, where we met our new teacher and explored our new environment. The children were full of curiosity and excitement as they looked around their future classroom and began to feel ready for the next big adventure!
Mathematical Development:Building on last week's learning, we continued to explore composing and decomposing shapes. We became shape detectives, searching for hidden shapes in pictures and spotting small, medium, and large triangles and rectangles. It was amazing to see how many shapes are hidden in everyday objects once you know what to look for!
Literacy Development:We used our wonderful writing skills to help a character in our story, Noi, make a list of all the things he would need to look after the whale that washed up in the storm. The children were full of thoughtful and imaginative ideas, using their phonics and sentence building skills brilliantly.
Physical Development: In PE with Coach Beth, who came dressed as a shark! we played sea creature themed games full of fun, running, and dodging. The children had so much fun moving like sea creatures and working as a team.
We also had a very special treat on Tuesday: a cricket taster session! While the new starters visited our classroom, we had the chance to try out some batting and fielding skills and learn a little about the game. It was a fantastic new experience!
Understanding the World:On our Questful RE journey this week, we listened to the parable of The Sower. Using our gardening knowledge, we predicted what might happen to sunflower seeds in different conditions. We explored the message of the story, understanding that Jesus wants us to grow strong through love, patience, kindness, joy, and peace. The children offered some wonderful reflections on how we can 'grow' by listening and following good values.
Personal, Social and Emotional Development:In HeartSmart, our focus was: I can do it. Boris was stuck in a maze, and we had to help him find the way out! We talked about how challenges can feel tricky, but giving up isn't the answer. Instead, we encouraged each other to try again and look for new ways through.Boris says, "There is always a way if you look for it."
Galatians 6:9 – Let us not become tired of doing good, for if we do not give up, we will reap the harvest.
In our wellbeing time, we looked back through our journals from earlier in the year. It was so special to read our early thoughts, see how we've grown, and talk about what still feels true today. A lovely moment of reflection and pride in how far we've come.
Expressive Arts and Design Development:We began our music lesson this week by listening to "Jupiter, The Bringer of Jollity" by Gustav Holst. We recognised the joyful tone right away and remembered that Holst also composed the powerful piece Mars that we heard last term.
We then listened to the classic Singin' in the Rain by Gene Kelly and played a fun instrument spotting game, correctly identifying 3 out of 6 instruments!
We ended the session with a joyful performance of Big Bear Funk for Mrs Ward, complete with all the groovy moves and confident singing. What a brilliant way to finish the week!
Have a fantastic weekend
