Reception Class, we have made it !
I cannot believe we have completed our first term at school together. It has flown by!
Let us share in our learning this week...
In our Personal, Social and Emotional development, we focused on working together to find hidden hearts around the classroom. Once we had found one, we helped our friends to find their hidden heart. We then listened to Boris our robot who said, 'Our hearts are special and need to be looked after.'
We listened to a verse from the Bible from Proverbs 4:2 "Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it."
In our Physical Development, we focused on using our bodies to make jungle themed related shapes, movements and actions. We described different jungle animals and thought about actions to show how they moved. We put our actions into a small count phrase and added them together into a routine. At the end we performed our routine to our audience and bowed to finish our performance.
In our Expressive Arts and Design, we listened to Boogie Wonderland by Earth Wind and Fire, we all found that we liked this song as we could have a dance to it. We listened carefully and found that we could hear maracas and castanets and thought we could hear a drum. We started to learn some new nursery rhymes and songs including 'I'm a little teapot' and 'The Grand old Duke of York'. Our new artist of today we learnt about is Hans Zimmer who we found out has composed lots of well-known songs in films that we have watched including The Lion King, Kung Fu Panda and Pirates of the Caribbean.
In our Mathematical Development, we have focused on the properties of 3D shapes. We began by exploring and discussing robots we had made from recycled material, for our home school link, and considered the 3D shapes we could see. We used our own familiar vocabulary to describe the shapes as well as being introduced to more mathematical vocabulary: curved, straight, round, corners, face, edge, sides, square, rectangle, circle, triangle, sphere, cube, cuboid, cylinder and cone as part of our Language and Communication Development.
We then began to explore the properties of familiar 3D shapes and considered whether they rolled or stacked, discovering that there needed to be a curved surface for an object to roll and a flat surface to stack.
To consolidate our learning, we constructed a tower using four different 3D shapes, where one of the shapes chosen had to be able to roll as well as stack.
In our Understanding the World Development, we have continued with our project of supporting the Nantwich Foodbank and would like to thank our school community for supporting us and kindly donating food items. Working together, we helped to sort and load all the items into the Foodbank staff's car to be taken to help local families.
Linking with this theme of helping others, we have explored influential people who have helped campaign to end child food poverty. We focused on the footballer Marcus Rashford for Black History month and leant how he used his childhood experiences and his influence to call on government ministers to help families with young children get access to free school meals during school holidays. He said, "Just look at what we can do when we come together." It reminded us of how we have come together as a school community to help others.
We considered his qualities as a person and as part of our Literacy Development, we wrote describing words around a poster of him. Here are our thoughts: he is kind, helpful, a good person and he has a good heart.
In our other Literacy Development, we have continued with our daily phonics sessions, recognising new sounds, hearing them in words, writing them down and reading and writing CVC words.
In Continuous Provision, we have followed our interests and role-played being teachers, teaching phonics, taking registers and practicing letter formation. We have enjoyed construction tall towers, perfecting the art of building stable foundations and side supports so they don't topple over! Our craft area has been a hive of activity as we have enjoyed making pictures using a range of different craft materials and mixed media. In our home corner we have been designing and making birthday cakes, then selling to our friends for a very reasonable price of £10!
For our wellbeing time, we were very excited to be joined by a member of our family, during our weekly buddy time on the field. I know our families really enjoyed seeing how much we enjoy this time each week.
