Year 6 News of the Week

Back home  /  News  /  Year 6 News of the Week

In Maths this week we have continue with our decimals unit. We continued to work on converting decimals into fractions and vice versa and we began to multiply decimals by one digit numbers. We have used this knowledge to solve relative facts. We will continue with this unit next week.

In English this week we have planned and completed our shared writes. We have composed paragraphs together and used this knowledge to write our own description of our chosen characters and settings. Powerful noun phrases, prepositions, similes and metaphors have been our focus. We will complete this unit next week with an independent write.

We have continued in Book club this week with our read aloud books and concentrated on developing our comprehension skills. I have talked to the children today about ensuring these books are shared at home often and therefore regularly changed. We have also continued to use our comprehension skills to unpick different styles of questions.

We have begun our new Science unit this week, Evolution, Adaptation and Inheritance. The key statement we are considering is – I can recognise that living things produce offspring of the same kind, but normally offspring vary and are not identical to their parents. This statement was firstly unpicked by using biscuits! We used two biscuits and their characteristics to then create an offspring biscuit and listed where its traits had come from. Of course we then at them! This lead nicely onto an activity used to determine if characteristics are inherited or acquired. Our final investigation using DNA was to create a dog. We then used its characteristics to decide if they had been inherited from its mother or father. Super job Y6.

In French this week we recapped last week's learning on actions and then used this knowledge to match each one to the correct French phrase. Prenez and posez are still catching us out!

Music continued this week as we practiced two rounds in Happy. We used the glockenspiels to accompany our song. Four bars continue to be used.

New homework has been set. This includes: Spag online tasks (1), TT Rock Stars practice and regular reading aloud with comprehension style questions being asked (sample questions are printed in the front of each reading diary). There are also comprehension questions set during our Book Club sessions that need answering please. I am hoping that all children will have changed these books next week in readiness for our assessments.

For our Science lesson next week, I have sent all children home with a small activity to complete. Please could these be ready for our lesson next Thursday.

Have a super weekend.
