We've had a wonderful time exploring our sense of hearing this week through a variety of fun and engaging activities. Here's a look at what we've been doing:
Sense of the Week: Hearing
We made our very own listening ears and took a listening walk around the school grounds. The children were excited to hear all sorts of sounds, from noisy children and the quiet rustling of leaves to the roar of an airplane, the bark of a dog, and even the stamping of their own feet!
We also practiced our listening skills in a very important way by learning about the fire alarm. The children did a fantastic job listening for the sound, lining up nicely, and walking sensibly to our safe space--well done to all!
Book of the Week: Polar Bear, Polar Bear, What Do You Hear?
Our book of the week was "Polar Bear, Polar Bear, What Do You Hear?" The children loved using toy animals during carpet time and they were amazed to hear the noise that each animal makes when we used our interactive board to play the sounds. It was a fun and interactive way to learn and practice animal noises and build their listening skills!
Rhyme of the Week: I Hear Thunder
We sang the rhyme "I Hear Thunder" and watched videos of storms, focusing on the sound of thunder rumbling. The children were fascinated by the sound and loved pretending to be the thunder by making low, rumbling noises.
HeartSmart Session
In our HeartSmart session, we sang "If You're Happy and You Know It" and added different actions to show various feelings:
We clapped for happy.
We stomped our feet for angry.
We gave ourselves a hug for scared.
This helped the children understand and express their emotions through movement and sound.
Looking Ahead
Next week, we will:
Investigate our sense of taste with some yummy activities.
Start building junk models of Boris the Robot using recycled materials and shapes--get ready for some creative construction fun!
This week was full of discovery and learning through sound. Be sure to ask your little one what their favorite sound was on our listening walk or how they liked pretending to be thunder!
