A very busy and productive week in Y6 with many subjects covered. You are working so hard Y6, and I think you are all superstars.
In Maths this week we have needed our resilience and patience as we continued to work with fractions. We have used our knowledge of lowest common multiple to add and subtract fractions with different denominators. We have worked with improper fractions and used these to enable us to subtract a larger fraction from a smaller one. We have built up our fluency and we now need to apply this knowledge when solving problems. We have completed an assessment and then moved on to multiplying fractions by whole numbers and fractions by fractions. We used rectangular and square paper to understand how the fraction part is always smaller. We have also completed an arithmetic paper applying our fraction skills. We have enjoyed iPad time this morning practising our times tables. Wow, what a lot of new learning. I am so impressed Y6.
In English this week we have edited our shared write thinking about our class targets. We have concentrated on subject specific language, punctuating our speech, and describing a scene using a sentence of three. Then we used these targets in our hot write. We will now edit our hot write to improve our pieces even further. I have loved reading all your pieces and think you have done an amazing job. Well done Y6.
We have used our book club sessions this week to look at different facts about different areas of WW2. We have thought about their layout and what features are used to encourage the reader to read on. We finished our week off with a timeline and looked at the different events that occurred during important milestones. We have also visited the Book Fair today so you may find a wish list coming your way.
We continued to think of our character strengths in My Happy Minds this week. We chose a new strength we could grow and thought about ways to do this.
Our afternoons have been just as busy as our morning sessions. We have enjoyed many different lessons. In Computing this week, we discussed our Alan Turing project. We decided on our props and on the jobs we would each take. Film director, producer, casting director, artistic director and editing director are the roles we have taken. We will now begin to write our scripts ready to practise using iMovie and the green screen.
We enjoyed another science lesson on electricity. We recapped electrical symbols before drawing our own circuits. We challenged each other to draw a new circuit where the bulb is brighter, or the buzzer is stronger. We even had time to make group circuits thinking about a brighter light.
In DT this week we used our designs to create our templates. We will use them next week to cut out our poppy fabric and begin to think about our stitching.
Our Incarnation unit continued in RE this week. We used our freeze frame photos to think about Christian symbols from new pieces of artwork. We spotted the symbols of God the Father, the Holy Spirit and Jesus in them and added these symbols to our own modern art. They look so effective.
Our Geography unit continued this week as we thought about the changes to a region in the UK. We used the Olympic Games as our stimulus.
We have also enjoyed spending time with our buddies during our daily mile.
Congratulations are in order to our girls football team. Myla, Eliza and Verity joined some Y5 girls this week to compete against other CDAT schools. They are wearing their medals with pride. We are proud of you girls.
We can't wait to present our afternoon tea party on Wednesday and perform for our grandparents even though the electricity failure cut our practices short this week.
I haven't set any homework for this week as I would like all my children to either bake using rationed items (not essential) or contribute to our afternoon tea by donating an item of food. Please note we cannot accept foods with a nut content. Just another quick reminder to let me know if your child does or does not have a grandparent attending our celebration party.
Have a wonderful weekend.
Your teacher,
Mrs B.
