Welcome back to you all. You have settled straight back into your learning and completed a busy week. Well done Year 6.
In maths this week, we have looked carefully at the vocabulary of our next unit and had a go at finding equivalent fractions and simplifying them. We know times tables are very important and need to be on the tip of our tongues. We also need to remember how to use factors and multiples too. Remember five minutes practise on TT Rock Stars each night will support your learning. Homework has been set to consolidate our learning.
In English this week we have begun a new unit based on the book Story Like the Wind by Gill Lewis. We began by looking at different key items from the story and predicting what we thought it may be about. We have used illustrations to build vocabulary and to write an onomatopoeia poem. We have sailed a stormy sea on a small boat (otherwise known as a PE mat) and thought about how we would feel if we were a character in the book. Next week we will wite a setting description and begin to analyse this text and investigate the writer's knowledge. Brilliant work Year 6.
We have begun a week of reading with an adult in Book Club and changed our books if needed. Year 6 challenge reads have also been a focus. Some children have completed book reviews, and we are all on our way to a bronze award. Super news.
In Spellings this week we have focussed on multi syllabic words and knowing how to double a consonant if the stress is on the second syllable. We have completed this unit. Well done Year 6.
In computing this week, we thought about using an existing game on Scratch 3 to make alterations and make our own. We all used a Mars Landing game and used coding blocks to make our changes.
We completed our history unit this week by sharing all our knowledge in an assessment. We used a comic strip to answer the question – what was it like to be a child during the Blitz? Amazing sketches and captions to share your understanding. Well done Year 6.
We continued to think about pilgrimage journeys in RE this week as we considered the question; what does a pilgrimage mean to a person of world faith. We all researched different faiths and considered what makes their journeys so special.
We began a new DT unit this week investigating sculptures. We discussed new vocabulary and then went on to discuss different playground structures. We decided on our class criteria and thought about structures we would like to create. We ended our lesson by designing 5 pieces of equipment ready to put into a site plan next week. We are very excited about this unit and can't wait for our next lesson.
We began a new Science unit this week investigating light. We recapped our Year 3 learning and used Explorify to discuss and recap facts. We then considered the question – does light travel in straight lines? We also discussed what it felt like to wake up in the dark. We then conducted an experiment to prove that we can only see if light is present. We will continue with our new unit next week.
We were thrilled this week to create an art gallery in our hall containing all our completed 3d models. We invited our favourite Reception buddies into the hall to walk around and enjoy our work. A special moment for us. Thank you Mrs Ward.
We have taken part in two PE sessions this week.
To begin our new learning in music, we were asked the question – How does music connect us to our past? We created a class mind map and wrote our shared ideas in our books. Linking in with our new topic in music – Wartime Music, we discussed how important we felt music will have been during the war. We can see how some people would have needed music to create a distraction. Music could have been sung in air raid shelters to keep people feeling calm – as hard as this may have been. We watched a video transcript of a soldier's diary about the events of the famous Christmas Truce during the first year of World War 1.
Another amazing week of learning Year 6. I am proud of you all.
Have a wonderful weekend
Your teacher.
