How is it the weekend already? Our four day week has whizzed by! We have had another great week of working hard. You are becoming great role models Year 5. Well done!

In Maths, we have been working on our place value to 100,000. After comparing and ordering numbers, we moved onto roman numerals. This was the last lesson in our unit. We'll be moving onto place value to 1,000,000 next.

In English, we started planning and writing and 'Shared Writing'. We are continuing with the theme of journalistic writing. Instead of Goldilocks and the Three Bears (the focus of our model text), we are basing our article around the story of Little Red Riding Hood.

We have also started our MyHappyMind lessons this week. It was a fascinating lesson as we learnt about three parts of the brain.  We learnt about the hippocampus, the amygdala and the prefrontal cortex.  We learnt that the hippocampus is like a scrapbook; it's wear all our memories are storied.  The amygdala is like the security guard because it keeps us safe and is responsible for the fight, flight or freeze reaction and the prefrontal cortex is used in decision making.  It was fascinating to learn about it.

In Science this week, we carried out an investigation into friction.  We looked at how different surfaces and hinder or aid the movement of an item.  The conclusions from our investigations found that rougher surfaces produce more friction and the more friction there is the slower something will move.  In R.E this week, we continued to look at the story of Moses and the Exodus.  We looked at the specific bible passages that shared this story and create some beautiful art work using them.  In Music, we appraised a song entitled – Words Can Hurt. Whilst listening to the song, we created a mind map of our initial thoughts. Then, as a class we added extra ideas to them. Being kind was the shining message. We learnt that in Islam, it is important to avoid 'harming other people with your tongue. 'This means that you should be careful with the words you use. In the words of the Persian poet Rumi, 'Before you speak, let your words pass through three gates. At the first gate, ask yourself "Is it true?" At the second gate, ask "Is it necessary?" At the third gate ask "Is it kind?" To end our lesson, we played numerous notes on our glockenspiels. We are improving when we play, and when we need to rest.  Finally, we ended our week with French and Art. In our French lesson, we learnt the names of different shops you could find around town.

Hope you're having a fab weekend,

Miss P
