What an amazingly fun week we've had in Year 5! From enjoying our final visit to Wybunbury Moss to getting hands-on in the kitchen and creating our very own Bolognese sauce, there's been so much to smile about. Alongside all the excitement, you've shown fantastic focus and effort in every lesson. Let's take a look at everything we've been up to!

In English, we finally got round to planning and completing our very own survival guides on how to survive in the Amazon Rainforest. You included some brilliant advice and essential skills, such as making fires, building shelters, and campfire cooking. It was fantastic to see you using your Year 5 writing tools so confidently -- well done for creating such detailed and informative guides!

In Maths this week, we explored negative numbers. We practised counting forwards and backwards through zero, learning how numbers continue below zero into the negatives. It was great to see you growing in confidence as you tackled number lines and solved problems involving temperature and real-life contexts!

In RE this week, we learned about Abigail from the Old Testament and explored the important choices she made in a difficult situation. We focused on the moment when Abigail chose to take food and gifts to David and his men to calm him down and prevent him from attacking her household. We discussed whether this was the right decision and how it showed wisdom, courage, and kindness. It was wonderful to hear your thoughtful reflections and how you linked Abigail's actions to doing what is right, even when it's hard.

In DT this week, we got hands-on in the kitchen as we prepped our ingredients ready to make our Bolognese sauce. We learned important food preparation skills, including the claw grip, bridge grip, grating, and peeling. You did a brilliant job preparing onions, carrots, garlic, and any other ingredients you chose to add to your dish. It was fantastic to see you working safely, sensibly, and confidently with the equipment! On Wednesday, we spent the morning taking turns to cook our very own Bolognese sauce. We started by softening onions and browning the mince, before adding our own unique ingredients to create bespoke sauces full of flavour! While some of us were busy cooking, the rest of the class designed creative labels for our fantastic finished dishes. It was a brilliant morning filled with teamwork, delicious smells, and lots of proud faces!

In our history lesson, we went back in time to the enchanting realm of the ancient Maya civilization. In this week's lesson, we marvelled at their remarkable writing system, delving into the intricacies of hieroglyphs and glyphs. We even had a go at making our own. During the lesson, we also engaged in captivating discussions about the similarities and differences between the Maya writing system and our own. Unveiling the mysteries of their written language deepened our appreciation for their rich cultural heritage and ignited a curiosity to learn more.

In French this week, we continued our "Going Shopping" unit -- this time focusing on vegetables. We learned how to name different vegetables like "des carottes" (carrots), "des tomates" (tomatoes), and "des pommes de terre" (potatoes). We also practised how to ask for some vegetables using phrases like "Je voudrais des carottes, s'il vous plaît" (I would like some carrots, please). It was great to hear you trying out your speaking skills with confidence during our role-play conversations. Très bien, Year 5!

In Geography this week, we completed our end-of-unit check to showcase everything we've learned about the Amazon Rainforest. It was great to see how much you've remembered -- from the rainforest's location and climate to the people who live there and the importance of protecting it. You've worked so hard this term, and your knowledge really shone through!

In this lesson, you got to explore how the 'if... then... else...' structure works to ask a yes or no question and decide what happens next. You figured out that the question is the condition, and depending on the answer, different things can happen! You also learned how to ask questions in Scratch and how the user's answer helps control what your program does. Then, you designed your own program that uses selection to branch into two different paths based on the answer. After that, you got to test your program and see if both outcomes worked like you planned. Great job--you're getting better at making programs that can make decisions! Keep it up!

To end our week, we heading down to the moss for our last Wybunbury Moss sessions. As we walked around, we thought about how the moss has changed since our first visit back in March. It was definitely much greener. We also saw some creeping cranberry and some cotton grass which we didn't see before. We have loved our John Muir adventures. It has been so wonderful being able to learn about and help conserve a beautiful natural environment which is right on our doorstep. We would like to say a huge thank you to Mrs Tibbetts and the Natural England team for giving us the chance to take part in the John Muir award. We are going to be arranging a sharing session next half term to tell you all about what we have done

What a fantastic week it's been, full of learning, creativity, and hands-on experiences! From cooking delicious sauces and exploring rainforest facts to crafting survival guides and speaking French like pros -- you've impressed me every step of the way. I'm so proud of how hard you're all working and the brilliant attitude you bring to every lesson. Keep it up, Year 5 -- let's keep making the most of our final weeks together!

Have a fantastic weekend,

Miss Pennance
