This week you have been quiz masters, money experts and farming fanatics! Read on to find out what Year Two have been up to this week
In English this week, you delved deeper into the story of The Bog Baby by analysing the text through the writer's knowledge. You explored the key vocabulary and grammar features the author used to bring the story to life.Building on this, you created your own unique versions of a Bog Baby! You thought creatively about what your Bog Baby looked like, how it moved, where it lived, and even gave it a special name. These imaginative creations will play a key role in your upcoming writing as you use them to craft your own stories—how exciting!
In maths this week, you delved into the key life skill of understanding money. You began by exploring all the different coins, identifying each one, and learning their values. With this knowledge, you practised counting various coins to calculate their total amounts. You then moved on to notes, discovering what each one was worth and how they fit into the system of currency. By the end of the week, you were confidently counting combinations of notes and coins to find their total value—great work!
You have also worked so hard this week on all of your quizzes. You completed two maths quizzes, two reading quizzes and even a SPAG quiz. This has really helped me to understand what you have understood so far in Year 2 and what skills we still need to work on. I am just so impressed with how well you got on with these quizzes and the concentration and determination you showed all week. Well done, superstars!
In RE this week, you explored the concept of miracles. You started by comparing how miracles are defined in both the Bible and the dictionary, helping you understand their meaning in different contexts. You also reflected on your own ideas of miracles, sharing your thoughts and adding them to the floor book. Next, you read the story of the 10 lepers and learned how Jesus performed a miracle by healing all of them from leprosy. To deepen your understanding, you reenacted the story, stepping into the characters’ roles, and thought about how they would have felt. Finally, you wrote a heartfelt letter from the perspective of the 10th leper, thanking Jesus for this incredible miracle. Your work showed empathy and creativity!
In our courageous advocacy work this week, you continued your journey of becoming leaders of kindness. You learned about Florence Nightingale and how her work exemplified kindness through her tireless efforts to care for others. She inspired those around her to be just as kind and compassionate, leading by example in the hospital. After learning about her, you were introduced to a random act of kindness grid. Your challenge was to complete acts of kindness both in school and in class. It’s been wonderful to already see so many of you carrying out these thoughtful deeds. Well done, team—keep spreading kindness everywhere!
In history, you explored farming during the Industrial Period. You considered both the positive and negative impacts of advancements during this time. For example, you learned about selective breeding, which increased productivity and improved crops and livestock, as a positive development. However, you also reflected on the negative consequences, such as people losing their jobs because machines were introduced to take over the work. This helped you understand how technological advancements can have both benefits and challenges.
In music, we practised our ‘Be in a Band’ song and began selecting percussion instruments we felt would be best suited to use with our song. A few more roles were handed out and we decided the choruses would be a good place for us to take charge of in our groups.
Rolling – When rolling a ball it's important to bend the knees – not the back. After practising putting our opposite foot forward and ensuring we bent our knees, year 2 played a game of piggy in the middle. They were allowed to move around a certain area and needed to communicate with the the other defender to let them know when they were in a space ready to receive the ball. Afterwards, they played a team game to consolidate their skills. After the lesson we had feedback on how well we worked as a team and the importance of demonstrating good sportsmanship in team games.
In PSHE, you played an engaging game of spot the difference to sharpen your observation skills. Afterward, you discussed the importance of being more aware of your surroundings and the people around you, highlighting how mindfulness and attentiveness can positively impact your interactions and understanding of others.
In Computing, you enhanced your understanding of algorithms by exploring how to programme a Bee-Bot. You discovered the different directions a Bee-Bot can move and learned how to use the same four directional symbols to navigate in various ways around a mat. To start, you practised with a paper bot, creating algorithms on paper. Then, you input your algorithms into the Bee-Bot to test if your directions guided it to the intended destination. It was a fun and hands-on way to see algorithms in action!
In Science, you focused on identifying whether something is alive, dead, or has never been alive, using MRS GREN as your guide. You learned that if something is alive, it can perform all the seven life processes of MRS GREN. If something is dead, it once had the ability to do all these processes but no longer can, and if it has never been alive, it has never possessed any of the characteristics. You did a fantastic job categorising pictures into these groups—well done!
In Art, you explored the work of the artist Charlie French. You discovered that he is an abstract painter living in London, known for using bright colours to evoke happiness in his viewers. Charlie often employs a variety of tools such as mops, scourers, and spray bottles to create his unique paintings. You then created visual notes in your books to capture the essence of his work, helping you remember his creativity and artistic style.
What a wonderful week you have all had with lots of learning opportunities! Homework has been emailed out on Friday.
Have a super weekend Year 2, and I will see you on Monday.
