Welcome to Year Two!

What a fantastic first week we have had in school! It has been super welcoming you all back to school. You have had a brilliant first week in Year Two and have settled in beautifully to our new rhythms and routines.

We started the week getting to know each other and our classroom. We made a time capsule so you have something to look back on at the end of Year Two and you completed some maths outside recapping our numbers to 100. We then settled into our normal routine by Wednesday.

In English, you entered the classroom to a bag of clues that had been delivered. We found a boat, jungle animals, cars and even some binoculars. You came up with a prediction about what our story might be about. You wrote these on a post it note and we stuck it up on our working wall. We started to read our story which is called 'A river' and we learnt all about the adventures our character goes on and all the places they visit on their journey. What an exciting book! You completed some fantastic sentence accuracys whilst focusing on using conjunctions to expand our sentences.

In our reading sessions, you enjoyed choosing your challenge book and having a read of that. We even had a lovely visit from Mrs Chesters who read with some of you throughout the week. We loved showing our reading skills to her!

In Maths, we started our learning on place value to 100. You started by recapping your numbers to 20 and counting in 10s.

Our afternoon lessons have been focused on our big art project and our topic. Thank you to everyone who bought a cereal box in, it really helped us to complete our project. You learnt that our topic for this term was going to be transport. We read one of Miss Haynes' favourite stories which is called the naughty bus. As we read it we decided that we wanted to make our very own naughty buses. Over the afternoons, you have used masking tape to cover your box, you have painted it, added your characters on and even added some extra features. They look amazing and you really showed your creativity skills off! On Friday we test drove them around the playground and field to see what naughty things our bus might do.

To begin our music for this term, we looked at the social question – How does music help us to make friends? As a class we thought of some really lovely ideas. To make friends outside of school, we thought we could talk about music and share our favourite songs with people we know. We also thought music could help people if they get injured. For example, we could sing to them to cheer them up. We then copied the song B-I-N-G-O. We had to focus on when to clap and when to sing. We were so good at this! We even had an amazing visit from rock steady this week who completed an interactive assembly and workshop with us. There were some children from our class who got to play the drums and sing on the microphone. What an amazing experience.

This week year two have developed their fundamental movement skills from last year. They showed me their best balancing and pushed themselves to move gently between balancing positions. They added a beanbag for an extra challenge and came up with their most interesting balance to show off their skills. Afterwards they were able to demonstrate underarm and overarm throws and talk about which throws are best for what, so they used underarm throw for the precision game as they felt they had better control. Then when they were throwing further distances with the footballs, they tried overarm. They were very good at increasing the challenge in the tasks they were set to improve their throwing and catching skills and all children were keen to push themselves. We finished with a game of hot potato so we knew we all had to be ready with eyes on the ball so that we didn't drop the potato when it was thrown to us

Well done Year Two for having such a first week back! Have a wonderful week.

See you on Monday,

Miss Haynes
