We’ve had such a busy week of new learning in Y1

In Phonics this week, we recapped all of our sounds and even practised reading some tricky red words. We read a range of RWI books to improve our blending and fluency.

In English, we continued our Ready Steady Write unit. We delved deeper into our Old Bear story, thinking about the characters, setting and plot. We completed several sentence accuracy sentences throughout the week and we are getting so much better at recognising what makes a sentence. On Thursday and Friday, we spent time planning our stories as we aim to retell the Old Bear story next week. Well done, team.

In Maths, we continued to build our number of knowledge to 10. We focused upon some new learning around inequality signs this week. New language of more than, less than and equal to was introduced and used throughout the week. By Friday, we were comparing and ordering numbers with confidence.

In R.E, we continued our unit all about Harvest. Our big question is “How can we help those who don’t have a good Harvest?”. We looked at a range of pictures this week to help us better understand the Harvest and we particularly focused on a picture of a failed harvest. We thought about how the man in the failed crop would feel and what we could do to help him.

In Science, we completed an online game to help us sort a range of everyday materials into the correct categories. We used the class touchscreen to move them whilst giving ideas and justifying our decisions.

In P.E, we continued to build upon our fundamental movements. We practised our running, jumping and turning. We ensured that we could find an appropriate space and used bursts of speed to get us there. Well done, team!

In Geography, we continued our exploration of the local area. We thought about the types of buildings we would see in our local area. We mapped out our homes and some of the landmarks around them.

In PSHE, we continued our unit on “Getting Heartsmart”. This week saw us think about emotions and how these can impact other people. We used emojis to act out a range of different emotions.

In Computing, we continued with our investigation of “What is Technology”. We learnt all about what a computer is and how a mouse is used to control a computer. We then spoke about tablets and how the computer mouse has been rapidly replaced by our fingers and touchscreen. We practised swiping, clicking and pinching using an online paint app on the iPads.

In Music we continued to think about beats. To practise this we played head, shoulders, knees and toes. Y1 were brilliant at keeping the beat!

In our wellbeing time, we focused on what makes us happy. We used our new wellbeing books to draw our favourite things in the world. We had pets, family, friends and our favourite toys on show.

Throughout the week, we also had lots of provision time. During this time we enjoyed the garde, explored the provision areas in the classroom and enjoyed some role play games with our friends. It was great to see the construction and mud kitchen areas in full use once again.

What a brilliant week!

Enjoy your weekends,

Mr Dale
