We've had a week of making snowmen, researching artists and being historians.

In English this week, we had a letter off our penguin that told us that he had escaped from Chester zoo but had been returned back to his family. We found out lots of information about him. We then were told that there was a lion on the loose from Chester zoo. We had seen some sightings of our lion around school. This then helped us to change the lost and found story. We planned our own stories where we changed the character, place that the animal was being returned to and the type of transport that you were going to use. These stories are amazing and you have worked so hard on them. We will continue to finish writing this story this week.

In phonics you have been continuing to go to your phonics group and learn your new sounds. You have also completed an afternoon phonics session where we are reviewing our first few set 3 sounds. You are picking these up really well!

In maths this week, you have started your new topic on subtraction to 20. You recapped what subtraction is and what resources we can use to work out different subtraction sums. You have learnt to subtract ones and then you worked really hard to subtract tens and ones. We found this method quite difficult but with lots of practice you soon understood how it was easier and you were less likely to make mistakes. Your homework this week will help you to consolidate this method.

In my happy mind this week you continued to learn about what you appreciate. You thought carefully about the meaning of gratitude and what you are thankful for. In your journals you wrote about someone in your class who you are thankful for and why. It was lovely to read all of your comments abouts each other. You really do have super friendships in class and you are all very kind children.

In RE you answered the question 'what does the cross symbolise in the Easter story?' You listened to the Easter story and thought carefully about how the cross symbolises Jesus' death. We learnt that although this is a sad event it was also the moment where Jesus gave up his own life so we can all be forgiven for our sins. We learnt the word salvation and what it means.

In science, you built upon your knowledge of the human body by learning about your senses . You learnt the body part that is in control of your senses and labelled these in your books. You then went on a sense hunt outside and thought about how you can use your senses to understand the outdoor environment.

In history, you started your new topic on the history of Chester zoo. We started our lesson by learning about what a timeline is and how we use them in history. You then put your history learning about transport last term on your timeline. You then learnt about who George Mottershead is and why he is a significant person. You were all delighted when I told you in this lesson that we were going on our very own trip to Chester zoo so we can see George Mottershead's house and where it all started. There was definitely a buzz of excitement in the classroom!

In art, we focused on who Henri Rousseau was and we learnt some facts about him and his art skills. You found out that he was French, he was a painter and he painted the jungle using his imagination because he had never been there before. You wrote some of these facts in your art books and you explored some of his paintings.

You were very lucky this week to have two sportscape sessions and you very much enjoyed these sessions with Cerys.

We were also very excited to have some snow this week! You had lots of fun building snow men and rolling snowballs on the field. It was so lovely to see you okay so nicely with both Y2 and reception.

Homework has been emailed out on Friday along with your Chester zoo trip letter.

Have the best weekend superstars and well done for working so hard this week. You are superstars!

See you on Monday,

Miss Haynes
