Welcome to Y1 – 8.9.23

Our first few days together in Year 1 have been so much fun! We've already settled into some fantastic rhythms and routines, and I can't wait to continue our learning journey together next week...

In Phonics this week, we reviewed all of our sounds and even practiced reading some tricky red words. We made sure we all had super magnet eyes and listening ears. Well done.

In English, we focused on our senses this week. We went on a senses walk around the forest school area and then wrote about what we could see, hear, and feel. It was brilliant to see us all being fantastic sentence checkers. Well done, team. Next week, we will start our brand new Ready Steady Write unit – how exciting!

In Maths, we dove straight into our Power Maths unit. Our new unit is all about confidently counting to 10. This week, we grouped and sorted objects to 10 as well as focused on using a ten frame to quickly count numbers to 10. We were fantastic at this!

In R.E, we found out where our reflection areas are in the classroom. We also made beautiful prayer tags to hang on our reflection wall. We will fill these tags with all the amazing things you say and think about in relation to R.E throughout the year.

During our time with Mrs. Whittingham this week, we created an "all about me" piece of work. We told Mrs. W all about our friends, family, and favorite things to do. Well done, Y1!

In PSHE, we started our new unit on "Getting Heartsmart." We looked closely at the "Power Up" symbol and thought about what makes our hearts happy and unhappy. We drew pictures to demonstrate this.

In Computing, we practiced our skills using the iPad. We learned key skills such as locking and unlocking, closing and opening apps. We also used the camera and practiced taking pictures. We can't wait to use the iPads throughout the year!

For our first music lesson of this half-term, we moved like penguins, danced to a steady beat, scrunched our faces up like a giraffe, moved like an elephant, and roared like a lion! Wow, year one, you are off to a great start!

Throughout the week, we also had lots of provision time. During this time, we enjoyed the garden in the sunshine, explored the provision areas in the classroom, and enjoyed some role-play games with our friends. Everyone seems very happy, and we were all fantastic at sharing. A super start, team!
