Another week where we have worked hard and learnt lots...including being rock stars, rock detectives and star readers! Read on to see what year 3 have been up to this week!
In maths, we continued with our fractions unit. We recapped some lessons from Year 2 about recognizing a whole and parts in different ways and then we moved on to firstly recognizing mixed numbers and then representing them in different ways. Your attitude towards this unit of work has been great and you even learnt a song called 'Fractions Rock' at the end of the week!
In English this week, we learnt our Talk 4 Writing model text which this time is a warning story. You started off the week writing your own warning stories which were fantastic to read. We then acted out parts of the model text where the main character gets lost in the colosseum! We explored his feelings at different parts of the story. You also experimented with word choices to make your opening sentences powerful and make the reader want to read more of your story! Lots of you chose to read these to the class too which was so lovely to hear.
In reading this week, we started our new Steps to Read unit all about Rocks and Minerals. We used the non fiction text to answer the questions 'What is a rock?' 'What is a mineral?' and 'What is the difference between a rock and a mineral?'
This led nicely into our new science unit all about rocks and soils. This week, you investigated different rocks and using the clues were excellent rock detectives, working out which rock matched the clues. You learnt about sandstone, slate, pebbles, chalk and granite to name a few! You learnt about what different rocks are used for and used science words to describe them, thinking of their appearance and texture.
In art this week, we worked really hard! We completed our roman mosaic patterns within our Wybunbury Delves badge. The repeated patterns are that good; we even complimented each other! Our next task was to decide which colours we would like the background of our Roman Emperor profile picture to be. Using our mosaic knowledge, we had to think carefully about our colour selection to make sure the profile of the emperor will stand out. Some of us changed our original idea once we heard the ideas of others. We can't wait for next week!
In RE this week, we discussed what Christians do around the world to mark Good Friday. We created a small book of facts, concentrating on our shading of pictures and sentence structure. In Worship this week, we learned about looking after God's world and we were excited to find out reception are planting new trees to bring new life and habitats to our school. Mrs Pointon was really impressed with how much we cared about the new trees that she asked our class to do a special job of looking after the new trees in our school grounds. We also really enjoyed a special worship song (My Lighthouse) with year 4 on Friday.
In PE as part of number day, we teamed up with Year 4 to play lots of number games outside. We read times tables and exercised to the answers, jogged, hopped and skipped to missing number problems and were throwing and catching to number sequences. We also enjoyed some tt rock stars time in the afternoon for part of number day. Well done Y3!
In music, as it was numbers day we used 'The fractions Rock' as our warm up song before listening to some Indian folk music... we talked about what colours the music made us think of and why. We also continued with the recorders having lots of fun.
I'm already looking forward to our next week together.
