Welcome back to a new term of PE!
This half term, up until Easter, all classes from year 1 to year 6 will be focusing on athletics. We will try to work outside as often as possible but if the weather is against us we will work in the hall. Please make sure your child has PE kit for indoor and outdoor and also has trainers for running.
PE will be on Tuesday for years 4 & 5, Wednesday for years 3 & 6 and Thursday for years 1 & 2, however it is best to leave PE kits in school all week.
This week all classes, except year 2, began their athletics units.
We started by looking at how we start sprint races. We found our dominant leg by standing on tiptoes and falling forward. The dominant leg is the one that steps out first to stop us falling over! This leg is in the front when we start a race, ready to power us down the track. We also learned about standing on the balls of our feet, bending our knees, leaning our weight forward and having our arms ready. Next, we practised our starts and keeping low for the first 5 metres. Then we tried running with high knees and running on our toes. We found that we have some super fast starters across all of the classes!
As it was year 2 theme day on Thursday we decided to continue their theme, space, into PE. First we played Race to the Galaxy! This was a team game where each team could only travel around the planet surface using hovercrafts (hoops), they could only move together, stepping from one hovercraft to the other to collect fuel (beanbags) to take back to their rocket and place in their engines (spots). Each team had a colour and were only allowed to collect fuel in their colour. The first team to fill all of their engines was the winner! Then we played a game of throwing planets (balls) at the sun (yellow ball) to try and knock it into each teams area. Finally, we finished with a game of Man from Mars, a space variation of Please Mr Crocodile.
Another brilliant week, well done everyone!
Have a lovely weekend.
