Happy Friday, Year 5!

What another fantastic week we've had! You've been working incredibly hard, and it has been lovely to see so much enthusiasm and determination in everything we've done.

Our biggest wow moment this week has definitely been finishing our wonderful stories inspired by The Little Island. I've thoroughly enjoyed reading your work and seeing all your fantastic ideas come together. You've worked hard to include a range of writing skills, including expanded noun phrases, fronted adverbials, subordinating conjunctions and correctly punctuated speech. It has been particularly lovely to see you thinking carefully about your vocabulary choices and using descriptive language to bring your stories to life. You should be very proud of yourselves!

In Maths, we continued our work on rounding, focusing on rounding numbers to the nearest 10,000 and 100,000. We learnt some useful top tips to help us along the way. First, identify the place value column you are rounding to. Next, find the multiple before and the multiple after your number. Then, look at the digit immediately to the right to decide whether to round down or round up. Remember, 0 to 4 means round down, while 5 to 9 means round up! Towards the end of the week, we also began exploring negative numbers and thinking about where we might come across them in everyday life.

As part of Black History Month, we learnt about the incredible Katherine Johnson, a mathematician whose calculations helped NASA send astronauts into space. We discovered how she overcame unfair barriers because she was a Black woman working at a time when many opportunities were denied to people because of their race or gender. Her determination, intelligence and achievements gave us lots to think about, particularly the importance of treating everyone fairly and recognising that everybody has something valuable to offer.

Alongside all of this, you've also enjoyed lessons in RE, PSHE, PE, Music, Art, Spelling, Reading, Handwriting and French.

Another busy and successful week, Year 5! I'm really proud of the effort you've put into your learning.

Have a wonderful weekend!
