Dear Parents and Carers,

We have had another fantastic week of learning in Year 3 and would like to share some of our highlights with you.

This week, we began our new statistics unit by exploring pictograms. We created our own human pictogram by casting votes and physically representing the data ourselves. We then replaced our bodies with cones and discussed what each cone represented within the pictogram. The children demonstrated excellent reasoning skills as they asked analytical and critical questions about the data and what it showed us.

Later in the week, we progressed to bar charts. Using multilink cubes as a practical, concrete resource, the children cast their votes and represented the results visually. We discussed the key features of a bar chart and practised drawing and labelling them accurately.

In English, we finally reached the end of The Snorgh and the Sailor by William Buckingham. The children thoroughly enjoyed discovering how the story concluded. Throughout the week, we continued to apply our SPaG skills in our daily learning, focusing on apostrophes for contraction, direct speech and subordinating conjunctions.

We continued our work on databases in computing, developing our understanding of how information can be organised, stored and searched efficiently.

In RE, we explored the difference between rules and laws. The children engaged thoughtfully in discussions about why rules and laws are important and how they help communities to function safely and fairly.

This week, we concluded our unit on Animals Including Humans in science by investigating how muscles work and why they are important in the human body. The children created their own models of an arm using lollipop sticks, tape and elastic bands to demonstrate how the biceps and triceps muscles work together to create movement. It was wonderful to see their scientific understanding brought to life through this practical activity.

In Art, we evaluated our gestural drawings by taking part in a gallery walk around the classroom. The children carefully observed each other's artwork and left post-it notes identifying strengths as well as offering constructive feedback. They showed great maturity in both giving and receiving feedback and demonstrated a real appreciation for each other's creative efforts.

In DT, we began preparing for our upcoming cooking project by tasting a variety of seasonal foods. The children carefully evaluated different ingredients, discussing their appearance, texture, smell and taste. They considered which flavours and ingredients would work well together and used their findings to help design their own seasonal tarts, which they will be making next week. The children enjoyed sharing their opinions and justifying their choices, demonstrating excellent evaluation skills throughout the session.

I am incredibly proud of the enthusiasm, resilience and curiosity the children have shown across all areas of learning this week. It has been a week filled with practical lessons, which has been super fun!

Have a wonderful weekend!

Mrs Roney.
