Year 1 News 8.5.26

Happy Friday Year 1! 

We received a note from Stella asking us to help clean the beach. She then sent us some instructions explaining how to clean a beach safely. We have been asking lots of questions and thinking carefully about how we can help. As we do not live near a beach, we decided that we are going to write instructions on how to clean our playground to help Year 3 instead.

In Math, we have been learning about quarters of shapes and quantities. We discovered that if we fold something in half and then half again, we make 4 equal parts. We had lots of fun sorting one quarter into different amounts and exploring how quarters work.

We had a lovely walk through the village on Wednesday, taking the route we had discussed in Geography as being the safest. We met Rev Alison at the church and she very kindly showed us what a baptism would be like. We had great fun baptising our doll baby, May, with some very proud mothers and godparents involved!

In Art, we continued looking at spirals. We had a go at drawing shells using one continuous line. It was really tricky not taking our pens off the page, but we worked very hard and created some lovely pieces of artwork.

In Computing, we used the toolbar to change the text for our missing posters. We experimented with different fonts, sizes, and colours, which was great fun. Lots of bright and eye-catching posters were beginning to be made!

In Science, we looked at garden and wild plants. We went on a hunt for wild plants in our garden area and found lots of buttercups, daisies, and dandelions. We now know that wild plants grow where their seeds fall.

In PE, we practised rallying the ball backwards and forwards. We started by hitting the ball or beanbag up and down independently before working with a partner to see how many rallies we could complete together. There was lots of great discussion about how to hold a tennis racket correctly.
