What a busy and exciting week we have had in Year 1!

In English, the children have been working incredibly hard writing their own stories. I have been so impressed with the fantastic ideas and the amount of detail they have included—there are some budding authors in our class!

In Math, we explored 3D shapes and their properties, identifying features such as faces, edges, and corners. We then moved on to learning about halves, understanding that a half is not just a part, but must be equal.

In Geography, we investigated the closest play area to our school. Using Digimaps, we located it and explored aerial photographs and maps of our local area. The children then plotted two different routes to the park and discussed which would be the safest to take.

In RE, we learned about the baptism of Jesus Christ in the Jordan River. The children created their own beautiful drawings to represent this special event. We are very much looking forward to visiting the church next week to see what a baptism is like.

In Computing, the children did an amazing job logging into the Chromebooks independently. They practised using the shift key for capital letters and typed their own sentences. We also explored the toolbar, experimenting with bold, italics, and underline—everyone loved seeing how their text changed!

In Science, we discussed the seasons and used our prior Geography knowledge to predict how trees change over time. We then went outside, sat on the field, and carefully observed and drew what our tree looks like in spring.

In Art, we continued our work on spirals. We explored spirals in nature and in artwork, and were introduced to Kolam art. We learned that Kolam patterns are created daily using rice flour, with continuous lines, shapes, and spirals. The children created their own colourful, inspired designs and really enjoyed experimenting with continuous line drawing.

In Heartsmart, we discussed the idea that “fake is a mistake” and talked about being transparent and honest with our friends—so nobody has to guess how we are feeling inside.

In PE, we continued with tennis. We practised how to hold a racket correctly, worked on throwing and catching, and challenged ourselves to keep a rally going with a partner. The children showed great determination and teamwork.

I am so proud of all the children for their hard work this week—well done, Year 1! I hope everyone has a wonderful bank holiday weekend.
