Year 1 News 11.9.26
What an amazing first full week we have had in Year 1! The children have worked incredibly hard to listen carefully, follow instructions and apply their learning. They have settled into our classroom routines brilliantly, and we are already so proud of them. We have had such a busy and exciting week!
Our English learning has begun with a very special story, which was delivered to us as a present from Ruby the Dragon!
We now have our very own Dragon Mailbox in our classroom, where the children have been writing short letters to Ruby and posting them for her to collect. We even ventured outside to our Forest School area, where we worked together to build caves for Ruby! The children made cardboard signs to put outside their caves to make sure that nobody entered without permission. We have loved becoming part of Ruby's adventure!
In Science, we have been learning all about materials. We headed outside on a materials hunt to find objects made from different materials, including plastic, rubber, metal, fabric and wood. The children did a fantastic job of identifying materials and explaining how they knew what different objects were made from.
In Maths, we have been learning effective strategies to help us count accurately. We have been teaching our Maths mascot, Matry the Mathematician, how to count carefully by sharing our knowledge and explaining our reasoning.
We have also been using Numicon to practise counting forwards and backwards from different starting numbers, all the way up to 10. The children have been fantastic at explaining how they know their answers!
We have joined up with Year 2 for PE this week and have been learning how to throw and catch a ball. We have played lots of fun games to develop our throwing and catching skills while also practising our listening, following instructions and working as a team.
In RE, we have been learning about Harvest and exploring where different foods come from. We even became food detectives and taste-tested three different varieties of apples grown in the UK!
The children compared the apples and talked about their different tastes, textures and appearances. It was certainly a delicious lesson!
In Art, we have been getting creative and making our very own dragons to be friends with Ruby! The children have loved designing and creating their own dragons, and we can't wait to see them all together on our display!
It has been such a wonderful first full week in Year 1. The children have shown enthusiasm, curiosity, kindness and a fantastic attitude towards their learning.
We are so proud of how well they have settled into Year 1 and are looking forward to all of the exciting learning and adventures still to come!
Have a restful weekend.
Mrs Roney.
