Y5 Weekly News 11.09.2026 + 18.09.26
Happy Friday, Year 5!
What a busy couple of weeks we’ve had! You have continued to settle beautifully into Year 5, and it has been lovely to see you getting stuck into your new learning with such enthusiasm.
In Maths, we continued exploring numbers all the way up to 1,000,000, developing our understanding of the value of each digit. This week, we built on this knowledge by learning how to partition five and six digit numbers in different ways. You’ve worked really hard with some very big numbers and are already showing growing confidence.
Our English lessons have certainly kept us intrigued! Last week, we finished reading Weslandia and discovered how Wesley’s unusual summer project grew into an entire civilisation of his own. At the beginning of the story, Wesley didn’t quite fit in, but by being brave enough to follow his own interests and celebrate what made him different, things began to change. By the end, the other children wanted to be part of what he had created and Wesley found himself surrounded by friends. This week, another book has captured our attention: The Little Island. We’ve met a group of animals living happily together on their island, but a disagreement soon begins when one of them starts questioning whether they really need the rest of the world. We have lots more to discover!
Our biggest wow moment this week came in History. We’ve been investigating how the arrival of the railways transformed Crewe during the 1800s, and this time we brought our learning to life with LEGO! We began with a much smaller settlement before gradually adding the railway, station, railway works, houses, shops and other services. It was a fantastic way to actually see how new jobs brought more people to the area and how Crewe grew around the railway as a result.
Across the two weeks, you’ve also been busy with Computing, Wellbeing, PE, Music, Science, RE and PSHE. You’ve packed so much into such a short time, and I’m really proud of the fantastic start you’ve made to Year 5.
Have a wonderful weekend!
