Welcome to Year 6!
What a fantastic first week we have had in Year 6! You have all done yourselves proud, and I have been so impressed with how well everyone has settled into our new routines. We have got straight into our learning, and I am already really excited to see what the year brings for us!
We certainly had an exciting start to our English lessons! We received a mysterious letter from someone with the initials M.B. but who could it be? We replied to the letter agreeing to the rules and were very surprised when, in return, we were gifted a book! Alongside this exciting mystery, we have been revisiting conjunctions and fronted adverbial, thinking carefully about how we can use them to improve and develop our character descriptions of Mr Bunny, working hard to choose interesting vocabulary and create detailed descriptions.
In Maths, we have been looking at place value and exploring the value of different digits within numbers. We also introduced the Gattegno chart, which proved to be a little tricky at first! However, everyone persevered, supported one another and worked really well together. It has been lovely to see such a positive attitude towards challenging learning already.
We have started our new Art topic by exploring the work of artist Lubaina Himid, looking particularly closely at her piece The Carrot Piece. We have begun learning about the grid method, creating 3 × 4 grids to help us when working on our own pieces. We have also been exploring positive and negative space and thinking carefully about how these can be used within artwork.
In Computing, we have started thinking about communication and how information gets from one person to another. We began by thinking about how we need an address when sending something to somebody — just like we need an address to send a letter. This led us to discover that websites also have their own addresses, and we explored IP addresses, finding out the IP addresses for different websites. It was a great introduction to thinking about how computers communicate with one another!
One of the highlights of our week was meeting our Reception buddies! We had a lovely morning getting to know them and spending time playing together. I was incredibly proud of how welcoming and kind everyone was. The children played so nicely with their new buddies and really helped them to feel comfortable. It was a wonderful way to start our buddy relationship, and I am sure there will be lots more lovely moments to come!
Thank you, Year 6, for such a brilliant first week. You have shown yourselves to be kind, hardworking and enthusiastic learners, and I couldn't be prouder of how you have started the year.
I am so excited for everything we are going to learn, achieve and experience together this year. Here’s to a fantastic year ahead!
Have a lovely weekend, you have certainly earned it!
