Reception weekly newsletter 11.09.26

Back homeReception Newsletter 11.09.26

We have had our first full week in reception and what a week it’s been!

We have spent a lot of our week completing communication and language, literacy and maths baseline assessments. I have been so proud of how amazing you have all been on them and it gives us a really good starting point to our reception journey.

“Run, run as fast you can you can’t catch me I’m the gingerbread man”. Can you guess what our theme has been in maths this week? We have been focusing on counting to 5 and using the gingerbread man story to help us. However, I soon realised that many of you can count beyond 5 so we spent our week counting to 10 and 20 using the gingerbread man to help us. You have used play dough and beads to decorate gingerbread men. You have used our outdoor environment to collect five objects and use them to help the gingerbread man cross the river. Mrs Lloyd helped us to learn a gingerbread man rhyme which was very exciting and helped us to count down from 5. I think our highlight of our maths journey this week was making gingerbread men! You all helped to weigh, sieve and stir the ingredients. You did a fantastic job and your gingerbread men looked delicious. We then linked this to our maths by adding eyes and buttons to your gingerbread men. You were confidently able to tell us how many eyes the gingerbread man has, how buttons and how many decorations altogether. What superb maths skills you used!

In our communication and language we have been focusing on the poem “Goodbye at the door”. This poem has helped us to understand that it’s okay to feel sad when saying goodbye to our families at the door. You added some great actions to the poem and we loved performing it on Friday. You can find our performance on seesaw!

In our worship time , you have been learning how to sing some of our songs ready for our welcome service!

In heartsmart, you were introduced to our robot Boris. You learnt all about the story of Boris and the scrapman. We found out that the scrapman wasn’t a kind person but Amber and Josh were very kind to Boris and made his heart light up. You learnt about Boris’ toolbelt and that all of the different tools help him to make good choices:

• Hammer – I am special

• Screw driver – I love others

• Spanner – I am a good friend

• Pliers – I tell the truth

• Saw – I can do it

You created your own toolbelt for Boris to wear by colouring and cutting the tools out and thinking about what they mean. We can’t wait to learn more about Boris.

In our PSED time, we spoke about the things we love in our life. We noted all of these down and put them inside our wellbeing book. We then learnt our first wellbeing tool which was hand breathing exercises.

Our highlight of the week was definitely our buddy time. We spent time having fun with our buddies in the garden. We were so excited to explore the garden resources with them and they spoke to us about what they used to like to play with in the garden. What fun we all had! There are some bonds that are definitely being formed already which is lovely to see.

As well as all of this we have been exploring our classroom provision by making roast dinners in the playdough area, crafting in the art area, using our water colour skills to paint lovely pictures, reading in the tree house, role playing in the home corner and creating car washes in the construction area!

What a fabulous week reception. I can’t wait for next week already.

Have a super weekend,

Miss Haynes
