Wow, reception what a busy week you have had with your transitions to Year One.

In English, we have been continuing to read our story ‘The sea saw’. You are really enjoying listening to this story and learning about how upset Sofia is when she realises she left her teddy on the beach. We are now excited to see if the sea will take the bear back to Sofia. We have so far been enjoying learning about which animals the bear swims past. On Tuesday, we had a super exciting day because you got to have your very own teddy bear’s picnic just like Sofia did with her teddy bear at the start of the story. You enjoyed writing invitations for your teddy bears and then we ventured up to the field to have our picnic. You enjoyed playing duck duck goose and chatting with your buddies who kindly joined us.

In phonics you have been continuing to learn your new sounds and reviewing old sounds to help you remember them. We have been enjoying reading our stories. I am so proud of all of the reading we are completing at home too Reception class!

In maths, you have been continuing to learn about time. This week you learnt the days of the week and the months of the year. You were able to confidently tell me that there were seven days of the week and twelve months in the year. We stood up and organised all the weeks and months when they were jumbled up in my basket. We also played lots of games and listened to different songs to help us remember. Each day we have organised the date on the board so we can remember the days in our week.

Our afternoon learning has mostly been focused on our RSE week. You have completed four lessons overall. Our first lesson was based on being introduced to Ezza the elephant who was worried about leaving her family at the school gate. We found out that she really enjoyed school because it was where she got to see all of her friends like Heckle. Our second lesson was based learning about Ezza and Heckle’s argument and how they had been fighting over a crown which ended up in the crown being ripped. We learnt that friends sometimes get upset with each other, different kind ways to make up after an argument and that hurting someone is never okay. In our third lesson we learnt that Ezza was worried about sports day because she thought her family was too loud and she was embarrassed about this. We learnt that everyone has different families and we looked at a range of photos that showed different families and read the Tod Parr book. You then drew your own family and thought about how you can help them at home. In our final lesson we learnt that we have ownership over our own body and that it’s important that if we don’t want a hug  from someone we can say ‘no, thank you’. We learnt that it is not rude to refuse a hug. I was so proud of how grown up you were in these lessons and how carefully you listened. Well done team!

I think our highlight of this week was going to Year One to see Mrs Roney and your new classroom. I know you got up to lots of fun like playing in the garden, making clay dinosaurs and completing some water colour activities.

I can’t believe we have got less than two weeks in reception now!

Have a wonderful weekend team,

Miss Haynes
