Back homeReception newsletter

I can’t believe we are nearly to our last week in reception! You are all growing so quickly.

In English this week, you have finished reading the story of ‘The see saw’. You have really enjoyed this story and learning all about the journey our lost bear went on and how he finally ended up with Sofia again. You have been writing sentences this week about the story and you even wrote some question sentences. You are now very good at remembering to use a question mark at the end instead of a full stop. You also created a lost poster and wrote some description sentences to describe what the bear looks like so he can be found!

In phonics this week you have finished your final week. This week, you have been focusing on reviewing your set 2 sounds. You have also been reading your books to build up on word reading and fluency.

In handwriting this week, you have been continuing to learn how to write your capital letters. You now know how to write all of your capital letters in our alphabet we finished it off with learning how to write V, W, X, Y and Z. We found Y the trickiest this week and needed some more practice!

In maths this week, you have been continuing to learn about your number bonds to 10. We have been learning different ways to work out our number bonds to 10. You enjoyed using the counters and shaking them and dropping them to see how many were red and how many were yellow to find a number bond to 10. You also enjoyed creating huge ten frames on the carpet using masking tape and using different items to fill the ten frame. We have also found some time in our maths lessons to practice writing our numbers to 10 so we are ready for Year One. I was amazed with some of your number formation and how hard you worked on this.

In our physical development, we completed our PE lesson on throwing and kicking. We pretended Bertie the bunny had joined the England team and we were training for our world cup. By the end of the session you had a go at playing a football game. The thrive coaches and I were so proud of how well you did in your football games. You showed great sportsmanship and there were some fantastic goals and saves from our goalies! We may even have some future England players amongst us.

In RE, you learned about the parable of the Wise and Foolish Builders. You discovered that the foolish builder built his house on sand, while the wise builder built his house on rock. We discussed why Jesus told this story and the important lessons it teaches. We explored how Christians believe that wise people listen to the teachings of Jesus and God and use them to make good choices in their lives. You also completed your RE Questful Maps to help deepen your understanding of the parables you have listened to this term.

In our communication and language, you learnt your poem of the week called ‘Taking in the scenery’ that we linked to our visit to the moss. We enjoyed rehearsing the poem during snack time and adding in our own actions. On Friday, we were so excited as we got to share our poem with pre-school we hope they liked it!

You completed your music lessons with Mrs Pointon this week and had lots of fun!

We have two highlights from our week. Our first one was definitely dressing up to celebrate national sports week and the world cup. I loved seeing all of your different outfits. We got a very special treat of watching the world cup highlights whilst having our snack on Monday. It was such a heart warming experience for me seeing you chant and cheer as the goals were scored or saved! We left feeling very proud of our England football team and I have already had requests for us to watch the highlights again from this weekend.

Our second highlight of the week was our incredible moss trip with our buddies. We were so excited to go on our first trip away from school and to have our buddies accompany us on it. As we walked hand in hand with our buddy, we came to the moss where we were greeted by Jenny and the Natural England team. We took part in four different activities: bug hunting in the grass, bug hunting in the trees, crown making and pond dipping. We had so much fun completing all of the activities. I couldn’t believe the different minibeasts you were catching we had grass hoppers, butterflies, moths and crickets in our nets and pots. In our pond dipping we had one child catch a small fish! How exciting for you all. I just want to say a huge thank you to Jenny and the natural England team for setting up all of the wonderful activities and leading them. Our Y6 buddies for always being there by our sides and being such fantastic role models. Our volunteers for helping us get to the moss we wouldn’t have been able to do it without you being there so thank you so much for taking time out of your busy days to help us. What a fantastic experience for you all!

I hope you have had a wonderful weekend and I will see you all on Monday for our final week.
