What a busy and fun week we have had in Reception! We have been learning lots of new things and having so much fun together, and we would love to share some of our favourite moments with you.

In our wellbeing time this week we talked about our emotions. We learned that emotions are words that help us describe how we are feeling. We thought of lots of different emotions like happy, sad, worried, bored, disappointed, excited and shocked. We talked about how some emotions feel really nice, like when we feel happy or excited. Other emotions don’t feel so nice, like when we feel angry or sad, but we know that it is still okay to feel them. We talked about what might make us feel these different emotions and what we can do when we feel them. If we feel upset or worried, we know we can ask a grown-up for help, have a cuddle or talk to a friend. For our calming activity, we closed our eyes and imagined ourselves doing peaceful things like walking along a beach, floating on a cloud or relaxing at home.

In Literacy we continued working on our story Little Red. We talked about how this version of the story is a bit different and more modern than the traditional one. We also learned how describing words can make our stories more interesting and help us imagine the characters and what is happening.

In PE we carried on our adventures with Berty Bunny. We played lots of exciting tag games and practiced our running in relay races. It was lots of fun and kept us very active.

On Thursday we celebrated World Book Day! We had a fantastic time listening to some of our favourite and familiar stories. We loved dressing up as our favourite book characters and we would like to say a huge thank you to all the mums and dads for helping us with our amazing costumes. We also read a lovely book called The Boy with Flowers in His Hair and talked about friendship. Afterwards we created some beautiful collage artwork inspired by the story.

In Maths we practiced our number bonds to 5 and showed how confident we are with them. Then we started exploring numbers 6 to 9 using ten frames. We learned how to see these numbers as a whole row of five and some more. For example, 7 is a row of five and two more, and 9 is a row of five and four more.

In Music we listened to the song Beyond the Sea sung by Robbie Williams. We listened very carefully and tried to hear all the different instruments. We heard lots, including a tambourine, maracas, piano, trumpets and a flute. We also talked about keeping the beat. We practiced keeping the beat by clapping, marching and waving our arms. We learned that sometimes the beat can be fast and sometimes it can be slow. We even played a fun game where we listened to a beat and then tried to copy it. To finish our session, we sang some of our favourite nursery rhymes together, including Old MacDonald Had a Farm, Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, Wind the Bobbin Up and If You’re Happy and You Know It.

It has been another wonderful week full of creativity, learning and exciting new experiences in Reception!
