We’ve had a lovely week in preschool, with lots of learning linked to The Wide Mouthed Frog and our rhyme Five Little Speckled Frogs. The children enjoyed retelling the story, joining in with the actions, and exploring new vocabulary, supporting their Communication and Language development.
In maths, we explored positional language through Rosie’s Walk, using words such as across, through, under, and past. The children created their own maps to show where Rosie went and followed a map outdoors to find the pictures of different animals across the school grounds, building early Understanding of the World and Spatial Reasoning skills.
Our older children learned the Read Write Inc. sound d, while our younger children explored going over and under with trains and bridges. We also practised oral blending through games, helping develop early Phonics skills.
For Physical Development, we continued our Sports Day practice and worked on fine motor control through name writing activities. Outdoors, the sunshine gave us plenty of opportunities for football, problem solving when a ball got stuck in a tree, and imaginative jungle animal play.
Indoors, the frog slime in the water tray was very popular, encouraging the children to explore different textures and how liquids of different viscosities move. We also learned about minibeasts, including a visit from some Madagascan hissing cockroaches. The children were fascinated and enjoyed minibeast bingo and making colourful frog crafts, supporting Understanding of the World and Expressive Arts and Design.
Next week, we’ll be learning about worms and sun beetles, with even more Sports Day practice to look forward to
