Preschool Newsletter – Listening, Shapes and Autumn Colours
We’ve had a lovely week in Preschool, full of listening games, exploring shapes and noticing the changes happening outdoors.
Our story of the week was Polar Bear, Polar Bear, What Do You Hear? which helped us think about our sense of hearing. The children enjoyed joining in with the repeated phrases and guessing which animal might come next. Our rhyme, I Hear Thunder, linked perfectly as we practised listening carefully to different sounds.
We played lots of listening games using musical instruments, encouraging the children to notice how the different instruments have different sounds loud or quiet sounds, fast or slow beats, and to follow instructions. Around Preschool we also had sound buttons to press, helping the children listen for clues during activities and move around with purpose.
In maths, our focus was on shapes. We looked closely at how some shapes have curved edges and others have straight lines, and began to talk about the differences between simple shapes. The children enjoyed spotting shapes around the room and using them in their play.
We have also been watching the trees in our outdoor area begin to change colour. To link with this, the children transformed our green paper leaves into autumn colours using a rollerball painting technique. They noticed how the colours mixed and talked about what they have seen happening outside.
It has been a gentle, hands on week of listening, exploring and observing, and we are so proud of how the children are growing in confidence each day.
