Preschool Newsletter – Colourful Elephants and Exploring Our Sense of Touch

We’ve had a bright and busy week in Preschool, full of colour, creativity and hands on exploring.

Our story of the week was Elmer the Elephant. The children loved hearing about Elmer’s colourful patchwork and celebrating how everyone is special in their own way. We painted our own Elmer pictures, mixing colours and noticing how they changed. The children also used colourful playdough to decorate toy elephants, building fine motor skills and creativity.

Our rhyme was Tommy Thumb, which linked nicely to our focus on the sense of touch. We explored feely boxes and talked about how the objects inside felt — soft, bumpy, smooth or rough. This helped the children build early language and confidence in describing what they notice.

In maths, we sorted objects by colour, both indoors and outdoors. Outside, the children collected different items and placed them into the correct coloured hoop. Indoors, they sorted coloured blocks and toys, practising matching, grouping and early problem solving.

We had a very special visit from PC Nick, who talked to us about staying safe. He reminded the children about holding their grown up’s hand, how the police are here to help us, and that it’s always lovely to wave and say hello when we see them.

We also made our own junk model Boris the Robots, remembering to add his special heart. This supported creativity, imagination and early design skills, as well as linking back to our HeartSmart learning.

It has been a colourful, creative and caring week, and we are so proud of how the children are growing in confidence each day
