This week in preschool we have started our new theme of Our Garden and Growing.

Through our stories and discussions, the children have been developing their Communication and Language skills alongside their Understanding of the World. We introduced our new traditional tale, Jack and the Beanstalk, and enjoyed our book of the week, Jasper’s Beanstalk. These stories helped us talk about how plants grow and change over time. The children used lots of new vocabulary and began to sequence events in the stories using words like first, next, then, after that, and finally.

In Literacy, we also enjoyed the rhyme I’m a Little Bean and created our own oral stories together. Some of our older children have begun learning the ‘m’ sound in Read Write Inc, practising saying the sound and starting to recognise and write the letter.

Our Maths learning focused on time and sequencing. We explored the days of the week, talked about changes in the month since before the holidays, and created simple timelines of our day at preschool. This helped the children begin to understand the order of events and how time passes.

Through Understanding the World, the children planted their own beans in a bag, and we are excited to watch them grow into beanstalks. We also spent time outdoors spotting signs of nature, including lots of ladybirds in the garden, and talking about what plants and living things need to grow.

In Physical Development, the children strengthened their fine motor skills through writing patterns, threading nuts and bolts, and exploring playdough. Outdoors, they enjoyed football, digging in the mud with construction trucks, and using flowers in the mud kitchen. Indoors, the children explored pouring and filling in the water and mud trays, developing both coordination and control.

In Expressive Arts and Design, the children decorated leaves for our beanstalk display and enjoyed choosing their own paint colours during creative free painting, expressing their own ideas and creativity.

During our Heartsmart (PSED) session, we listened to the story The Boy Who Cried Wolf. This helped us talk about making good choices and using our true words, understanding why honesty is important.

It has been a wonderful week of growing, exploring, and learning together. We are looking forward to watching our beanstalks grow and continuing our garden adventures next week!
