Welcome back after the half term break, the children have returned full of excitement for our new Time Travellers: Dinosaurs theme, and the week has been bursting with imaginative play, exploration and hands on learning.
Dino Land outside quickly became a favourite, with the children working brilliantly together to create habitats, trails and adventures for their dinosaurs. This rich outdoor play supported Communication & Language as they shared ideas, Physical Development as they moved, lifted and built, and Personal, Social & Emotional Development as they collaborated and problem solved as a team.
Inside, our dinosaur activities continued with stories such as 10 Terrible Dinosaurs and Dinosaur Roar, and our rhyme of the week 10 Little Dinosaurs helped the children practise counting forwards and backwards in a playful way.
Water play was hugely popular in our new trays both indoors and outdoors, with lots of pouring, tipping and experimenting — wonderful early Understanding the World and Mathematics as the children explored flow, volume and cause and effect.
Fine motor skills were strengthened through squeezing playdough through a garlic press, while outdoors the children enjoyed rolling large rollers to build gross motor strength.
Our number of the week was 5, and the children enjoyed spotting it, counting to it and representing it in different ways.
In phonics play, our silly soup was filled with things beginning with m, helping the children tune into initial sounds and explore early alliteration.
Creativity flowed throughout the week as the children explored watercolours to paint their own dinosaurs, and expressed their ideas through colour and mark making.
On Friday, we talked about St David’s Day and created bright, cheerful daffodil art to celebrate.
Next week, our dinosaur adventures continue, our traditional tale will be Goldilocks and the Three Bears, and we’ll be celebrating World Book Day on Thursday — a lovely opportunity for the children to share stories and imagination together.
