Preschool Newsletter – Our First Week Back

We have had a wonderful first full week in preschool, settling into our new routines and getting to know each other after the summer break. 

This week we shared the story “From Head to Toe” by Eric Carle, joining in with the actions and talking about the different ways our bodies can move. This links beautifully to the EYFS areas of Communication and Language and Physical Development, as the children listened carefully, followed instructions and used their bodies with confidence. Our rhyme of the week was “Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes,” helping us learn the names of our body parts and practise moving in time to music.

The children enjoyed their first carpet circle times, learning how we sit together, listen to each other and take turns to speak. These early routines support Personal, Social and Emotional Development as well as building strong foundations for communication.

In maths, we have been practising counting to 5 and recognising small groups of objects, supporting early number sense and the EYFS focus on Number.

Much of our learning this week has been through exploring our environment and discovering how to use our continuous provision. Indoors and outdoors, the children have been busy investigating the mud kitchen, builder’s tools, playdough, gloop, and train tracks. These activities encourage curiosity, creativity and problem solving, supporting Understanding the World and Expressive Arts and Design.

We have also spent time helping the children understand how to access different areas, how to tidy up, and how we play safely and kindly together. Building these routines early helps everyone feel secure and confident in their new preschool environment.

It has been a joyful, energetic start to the term, and we are so proud of how well the children have settled. We’re looking forward to lots more jungle adventures and sensory exploration in the weeks ahead.
