This week in preschool we have been using our senses to explore the world around us!

Our story of the week was Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?, which gave us lots of opportunities to talk about colours, animals, and what we can see around us. Our rhyme was our familiar Senses Rhyme, which linked beautifully with our sense of the week – smell.

Through Communication and Language and Understanding the World, we became little detectives and used our noses to investigate a variety of different smells. The children had great fun trying to identify scents such as Vicks, mint, and ginger. Some were much easier to recognise than others! We talked about whether we liked or disliked each smell and used words to describe what we could smell.

We also went on an autumn senses walk around the school grounds. The children used their eyes, ears, noses, and hands to explore the changing environment. We looked carefully at what we could see, listened for different sounds, felt different textures, and stopped to smell things we discovered along the way. This helped us notice the changes happening around us as we move into autumn.

In Maths, we explored shapes by putting puzzle pieces together. We discovered that sometimes we needed to flip, turn, and rotate the pieces to make them fit. The children showed fantastic problem-solving skills as they worked out which way each piece needed to go.

We have also been busy experimenting with colour mixing in lots of different ways. We mixed paints, coloured water, and even playdough to see what happened when different colours were combined. This gave us opportunities to make predictions, explore cause and effect, and express our ideas creatively through Expressive Arts and Design.

As we settle back into preschool, we have also been thinking about keeping ourselves healthy. We talked about germs and why washing our hands carefully helps to keep us and our friends healthy. The children practised washing their hands thoroughly, remembering to use soap and water and clean all the different parts of their hands.

It has been a week full of smelling, exploring, experimenting, problem-solving, and discovering, with lots of opportunities for the children to use their senses and talk about what they notice.

Next week, we’ll continue exploring our senses and the wonderful world around us!
