Welcome to Year 5
Year 5 is taught by Mrs Burns.
Welcome back. Many thanks for your happy Easter wishes. I hope you have all enjoyed your Easter break and you are ready for an exciting summer term of learning. Our new book for our new term is Gorilla Dawn, written by Gill Lewis. This book takes you deep into the African jungle as you discover the plight of the eastern lowland gorillas. A haunting and touching read exploring friendships in the most unexpected situations.
Imara and Bobo are two children imprisoned in the rebels' camp. When they learn that a captured baby gorilla is destined to be sold into captivity, they are determined to return it to the wild before it's too late. The consequences of being caught are too terrible to think about. Will the bond between the gorilla and the children give them the courage they need to escape? Is it a new day, a new dawn or a new chance?
Our learning journey will begin this term with our fabulous 'Big Art Project', where we will explore and use the techniques of artist Georgia O'Keeffe, creating a feature in our classroom by making larger than life leaves to help create a forest atmosphere. Joined with this we will be taking a closer look at Equatorial rainforests, in particular the Amazon Rainforest and comparing it to our book setting, the Congo forest. We will be writing powerful, persuasive pieces tackling deforestation and the impact this has on wildlife. Our music this term will complement our writing as we prepare raps to perform. This is just a snippet of the exciting work we will be doing this term.
The organisation of the week remains the same. PE will continue to be on a Thursday afternoon. Please ensure all PE kits and water bottles are in school and clearly labelled.
Weekly Homework set on a Friday
During the summer term, you are encouraged to complete your homework fully and on time with the help of homework and catch up club. You are welcome to use any or all three days (Monday, Tuesday or Thursday) to complete outstanding tasks.
~ Spellings, Spag, times table testing, mental maths and reading diary checks will take place on a Friday morning, so please ensure you bring in all relevant books.
~ MyMaths homework will be set every Friday with at least one task to be completed online. If you are unable to complete the task set please let me know and I will arrange for you to complete it in school.
I am thoroughly looking forward to our final term together in Y5. "Education is the most powerful weapon you can use to change the world." Nelson Mandela.
