Welcome to Year 5

Year 5 is taught by Mrs Burns.

Welcome back. Many thanks for all your Christmas wishes and gifts they are very much appreciated. I hope you have all enjoyed your Christmas break and you are ready for an exciting spring term of learning.

Our new book for our new term is Wolf Brother, written by Michelle Paver, this book takes us back into the Stone Age. There is plenty of page turning drama as every chapter ends with a cliff-hanger, this book definitely had me on the edge of my seat!

The story follows the main character; Torak, who is an outcast, all alone wounded, terrified and on the run. His only ally is an orphaned wolf cub. Wolf Brother carries you back thousands of years to a world steeped in natural magic and elemental terror, a world in which trusting a friend means risking your life. This is a fantastic book by Michelle Paver, the first book in the Chronicles of Ancient Darkness series.

Your learning journey will begin this term with our fabulous Big Art Project. You will explore cave art linked to the Lascaux and Peche Merle caves, producing your own print work. This will enable you to use D&T printing techniques as you decorate textiles creating a fantastic backdrop to our class display. Joined with this you will be taking a closer look at the Stone, Bronze and Iron Ages in Britain. Your Geography will continue this term with map work, as you use geographical skills to build your knowledge of the wider world. You will also be writing imaginative description, historical fiction and powerful poetry. This is just a snippet of the exciting work you will be doing this term. Click here for our holistic plan.

The organisation of the week remains the same. PE will continue to be on a Thursday afternoon. Please ensure all PE kits (warmer clothing included) are in school and clearly labelled. There are four weeks of swimming lessons to take place now the pool has re-opened. They begin on Friday 13th January and will end on Friday 3rd February.

Weekly Homework set on a Friday
During the spring term I continue to encourage you to always complete your homework fully and on time. Homework and catch up club will be available again this term. You are welcome to use any or all three days (Monday, Tuesday or Thursday) to complete outstanding tasks.

  • Spellings, Spag, times table testing and reading diary checks will take place on a Friday morning, so please ensure you bring in all relevant books each Friday.
  • MyMaths homework will be set every Friday with at least one task to be completed online. If you are unable to complete the task set please let me know and I will arrange for you to complete it in school.

I am thoroughly looking forward to another fantastic term together. "The best preparation for tomorrow is doing your best today." H. Jackson Brown.

    Your Teacher,
    Mrs Burns
