In English, we thoroughly enjoyed making connections between sets of clues that linked to four different settings: a blue sky, a cave, a savannah, and a desert. These clues helped us become fully immersed in our new book. We have enjoyed exploring the vocabulary and reading the vehicle text together. In our books, we have used these amazing settings to write fantastic simile poems. We have also worked hard today to publish our exploration narrative in our author books.

In Maths, we’ve been focusing on using blank number lines for addition. We thought carefully about which number to jump forward to when bridging across a place value boundary. We have also learnt how we can mentally partition numbers to mentally add large amounts. We have then applied this knowledge to subtraction. We have enjoyed developing our fluency on these concepts to improve our confidence.

We’ve begun our unit of PE by setting a high standard in our first football lesson. We learned when and where it’s best to dribble or pass and put our skills into practice in three different football games. We showed high levels of involvement and solved any uncertain moments with a quick game of rock, paper, scissors. Great work Year 5!

In reading, we explored how machinery helped mass-produce wooden blocks during Victorian times, deepening our understanding of industrial change. We compared how diagrams and written information were used to display information. We have then moved on to explore a 6-stanza poem based on the life of a Victorian seamstress. We have focused on using visualisation techniques to understand the meaning in the poem and to showcase what the poem is about.

In our Art lessons this week, we have worked hard to add combine our skills to (almost) complete our poetry zines. We have used layers of papers, colour mixing, mark making and printing to express the story of the Grotlyn through our books. We can't wait to share them with you.

We answered the question: 'What was Crewe like in the Industrial Revolution?' in History this week. We looked at images from the past to look at what life was like and explore the changes brought to Crewe by the introduction of the railway. We were amazed to learn that Crewe previously, in 1843, had a population of 793 people compared to a huge 40,000 in 40,000. We used our historical knowledge to make judgements on why these changes may have occurred. We enjoyed looking back at the development of Crewe Works and what this looks like and what replaces it today.

Our Heartsmart job this week focused on recognising and being grateful for the people around us who
cheer us on and encourage us. We thought of someone who does that for us. We wrote a letter to thank that person for always being there for us and for all
their support and encouragement.

Every time I think of you, I give thanks to my God.

Philippians 1:3

In our French lessons this week, we learnt how to talk about places around our school. We learnt the names for important areas like the library, computer room, hall, canteen and playground. We enjoyed playing a game of bingo to consolidate our knowledge of these new words.

This half-term we will be resuming our ukulele learning in music. This week, we recapped: how to hold the ukulele; how posture is important; as well as the string notes. We reflected on our previous learning. My Dog has Fleas is a great memory for us. We can’t wait to begin next week’s lesson by playing it.

In RE this week, we completed our unit of work on holy books. We learnt more about the Qur'an – including its messages as well as the importance this has on the lives of Muslim people. We then brought together all of our learning of the past 8 lessons. We reflected on similarities and differences between the Bible, the Torah and the Qur'an and completed our questful map for this unit.

Maths.co.uk homework has been set for this week.
Have a wonderful weekend!
