Without mathematics, there's nothing you can do. Everything around you is mathematics. Everything around you is numbers.
Shakuntala Devi

At Wybunbury Delves we aim to 'light the spark for a love of learning and of life' and believe Mathematics is a subject which offers the very best opportunities to achieve this.

Mathematics is a creative and highly inter-connected discipline that has been developed over centuries, providing the solution to some of history's most intriguing problems. It is essential to everyday life, critical to science, technology and engineering, and necessary for financial literacy and most forms of employment. A high-quality mathematics education therefore provides a foundation for understanding the world, the ability to reason mathematically, an appreciation of the beauty and power of mathematics, and a sense of enjoyment and curiosity about the subject.

How do we teach Maths at Wybunbury Delves?

We use First4Maths as a basis of our maths lessons starting in Nursery through to Year 6. Every lesson is divided into sections that involve plenty of direct teaching, sharing, collaboration, practice and reflection. Children are encouraged to solve problems each day through the concrete resources, pictorial representations and abstract thinking. At the heart of this programme is the idea that all children can achieve and be successful mathematicians with the right growth mindset.

What does a First4Maths Lesson look like?

Fluency/recap: Each lesson begins with a fluency task which will include a recap of previous learning. This is often something the children have been previously taught and encourages group or partner work. This involves lots of discussion to get children thinking mathematically.

Teach: This part of the lesson introduces the learning objective beginning with direct teaching. The children are presented with their resources, and alongside modelling, they problem solve and reason. Lots of interaction between teaching staff and children will take place.

Strive4Five: This part of the lesson gives children the chance to tackle 5 questions to show their understanding of the lesson objective before moving onto deeper thinking. This allows children to practice the methods they have been taught during direct teaching.

Independent work: The main part of the lesson consists of independent practice. The questions offer children the opportunity to work through problems related to learning objectives that become progressively harder. In the moment marking takes place within each lesson with instant feedback to children.
