Year 6

Back home  /  Our Learning  /  Our Classes  /  Year 6

Welcome back.

A happy new year to you all. Many thanks for all your Christmas wishes and gifts, they are very much appreciated. I hope you have enjoyed your Christmas break and you are ready for an exciting term of learning.

Well, we are now in the Spring Term of Year 6. Where does the time go? This term we will be following a whole school theme of 'Time Travellers.' Each year group will spotlight a different focus – in Year 6 our main theme is the Stone, Bronze and Iron Ages and of course there will be a focus on being test ready. This is an important time as we begin to gear up towards SATs which will take place in May. Covering the curriculum whilst producing our study workbooks will be completed over both spring and summer terms. This allows for solid preparations to take place for SATs whilst taking the pressure off completing study workbook pages for each term. We will be working hard to reach the high targets that you set yourselves and remember, nothing worth achieving is easy, so don't settle for second best.

This term's learning is based around several books with a focus on Wolf Brother by Michelle Paver. This book takes us back into the Stone Age Times. There is plenty of page turning drama as every chapter ends with a cliff-hanger. This book had me on the edge of my seat! The story follows the main character; Torak, who is an outcast, all alone, wounded, terrified, and on the run. His only ally is an orphaned wolf cub. Wolf Brother carries you back thousands of years into a world steeped in natural magic and elemental terror, a world in which trusting a friend means risking your life. This is a fantastic book by Michelle Paver, the first book in her Chronicles of Ancient Darkness series.

Your learning journey will begin this term with our fabulous Big Art Project. You will explore cave art linked to the Lascaux and Peche Merle caves, producing your own wall art. This will link later in our year to our Art unit – printing techniques – as you decorate textiles creating a fantastic backdrop to our class display. Joined with this, you will be taking a closer look at the Stone, Bronze and Iron Ages in Britain. Investigating artefacts and creating some of your own. Please click here to view my holistic plan.

The organisation of the week is as follows:

PE will take place over two days during this half term, a Thursday and a Friday. You are asked to come to school already dressed in your PE kit on both days. PE will be taught by Mrs Jenkins on a Thursday and Sportscape on a Friday. Please note that PE could take place outside even in cold weather. It is imperative that you dress for the changes in conditions. Your PE kits should consist of a Wybunbury Delves blue PE top or plain white t-shirt with no logos or prints, black shorts, white or black trainers, black tracksuit/joggers and a Wybunbury Delves black PE hoodie. A filled water bottle and a winter hat (all named) are also essential. We will also be continuing with the Daily Mile.

Forest Schools will be part of our curriculum in Year 6 this half term. This activity will take place in our outdoor learning area every Wednesday afternoon and will be ongoing during our wintery weather. Please ensure you come dressed appropriately in warm layers with a waterproof coat and sturdy shoes/wellies. A separate list has already been emailed to you. These much-loved sessions will be run by Mr Hadfield and will always have an adult from school present.

Homework will continue to be set each Friday. I encourage you to complete all your homework fully and on time. I use homework to consolidate your learning and to enable you to prepare for a new week. I will continue to run homework clubs during the week (some lunchtimes) to support this. Please be sure to use them whenever you need to. Homework will be checked and re-visited each week.

Homework activities could include: Maths.co.uk, or Power Maths, or Spag.com online homework will be set each week. If you are unable to complete these tasks at home, or if you need support, please let me know and I will arrange for you to complete them in school.

Times tables practice will also be included in your weekly homework – TT Rockstars continues to be a successful way to practice your times tables. Times tables testing will take place on a Friday morning along with an arithmetic paper which draws upon these skills, so keep practising!

Regular reading out loud at home will be included in your weekly homework. Please could you record each read by filling in each box in your reading diary. Remember to fill in the comment box as I like to read about your thoughts on your book. Our two-week rolling programme will be in place. This means that you will read with an adult each fortnight in Year 6. Research states that if you read for 20 minutes a day at home, you will hear 1.8 million words every year. Amazing, as many of them will be new ones!

We will continue to use our class reading website to enjoy challenging and recommended reads. On our reading website there are recommended books for you to enjoy, spelling links, some reading games and a book review section. I would like to encourage you to read and review as many books as you can from this list. You will find them by using this link. https://y6wdreading.weebly.com/ Remember you are working towards your y6 reading challenge badges.

Dates for your diary:

Monday 10th and Tuesday 11th January – Bikeability training, Wednesday 23rd – Friday 25th March – Edale residential visit. Our Class worship will be virtual this term as we work on our actions and become courageous advocates for our cause.

I know we will continue be a strong Year 6 partnership. As we are still unable to chat at drop off and pick-up times, please feel free to contact me using our new year 6 email address. It is: year6@wybunburydelves.co.uk anything urgent please telephone the school office during school hours and they will pass on a message and I will get in touch.

I am thoroughly looking forward to our time together this term. Remember to shoot for the moon; even if you miss, you'll land upon the stars.
