This week in preschool, we’ve celebrated wonderful traditions, explored new activities, and enjoyed plenty of outdoor fun. From glowing diva lamps to sparkling bonfire art, it’s been a week bursting with colour, creativity, and joy!
To begin our week, we looked at Diwali – the Festival of Lights. The children listened to the story of Rama and Sita and learned how Diwali is celebrated around the world. We talked about how this special festival, much like Christmas or Bonfire Night, brings people together through light, colour, and happiness. Everyone enjoyed creating their very own diva lamps, decorating them with care and pride.
As Bonfire Night approached, we shared our experiences of watching fireworks and celebrating at home. On Wednesday, the children made breadstick sparklers — a fun (and tasty!) way to bring the celebration to life. We described the sounds and sights of fireworks, then created bonfire pictures using autumnal treasures from our preschool garden. The children also made dazzling firework art, full of colour, sparkle, and imagination.
Our rhyme of the week was Two Little Dickie Birds, which linked beautifully to our maths focus on the numbers 1 and 2. We introduced these as our numbers of the week, and the children have been brilliant at recognising and showing them in different ways — finding one or two objects, holding up finger numbers, and even performing one and two actions like a single clap, stomp, or jump!
To build on this theme, we explored bird seed in our sensory tray and had great fun making nests for birds, carefully choosing where to place each twig and seed.
In our HeartSmart session, we read We Are All Different by Todd Parr and sang along to 1, 2, 3, It’s Good to Be Me! Together, we celebrated what makes each of us unique and special, learning that our differences make our preschool community brighter and stronger.
We also began to clap out the rhythm in our names and favourite words, inspired by the lively story Tanka Tanka Skunk. The children loved tapping, clapping, and drumming along, exploring the beat and rhythm of words in a playful, musical way.
It’s been a week filled with light, laughter, and learning — from celebrating traditions to exploring what makes each of us shine. We’re so proud of how curious, creative, and caring the children have been!
