Happy Friday, Year 5. We have had another fantastic week. You have worked extremely hard and been very focused. Great work, team.
In Maths this week, we've been busy revisiting key skills to help us feel confident and ready for our end-of-year quizzes. We had a quick look at negative numbers, explored how to calculate volume, and took part in some helpful revision sessions to review everything we've learned this year. You worked really hard and showed great focus -- well done!
In English, we started planning and writing our very own survival guides! There was lots of excitement as we decided what to include in our writing. Some of the brilliant ideas we planned to cover were how to build a shelter, how to cook in the wild, and how to start a fire safely. You've really impressed me with your creativity and how clearly you're beginning to explain each step. I can't wait to see your finished guides!
In Reading this week, we rejoined Dylan as he journeyed through the Amazon rainforest. In this week's lessons, we considered how the author has used figurative language to enhance the description.
The Old Testament continued to be this week's R.E lesson. This week, we focused on the stories of Deborah; we had the opportunity to dive into the details of what this remarkable woman's life. We took a closer look at the choices she had to make and considered whether those choices were the right ones based on the moral and ethical values we have been discussing in class.
In D.T, even though we're still waiting to finish our cooking unit, we made a great start on our new construction project this week! We began by learning what structures are and focused on different types of bridges. We explored the structural differences between an arch bridge and a beam bridge, then had a go at experimenting and making our own. It was brilliant to see you thinking like engineers and testing out your ideas creatively!
In our HeartSmart lesson this week, we explored the idea of hope. We talked about the quote, "Hope is being able to see that there is light despite all the darkness," and thought about what it means in our lives. Even when things feel hard, a little bit of hope can make a big difference. We discovered tools that help us stay hopeful, like setting goals, imagining a better future, and having people around us who encourage us. We reflected on the Bible verse: "The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it." – John 1:5
In history, we completed our next lesson on the Mayan civilisation. We used photographs of ancient Maya artefacts to draw conclusion about this fascinating civilisation. It was great to hear your ideas, and lovely to hear your discussions too. We concluded that the Maya were a civilised culture who had a writing system and a religion. They also were great craftspeople and they enjoyed leisure and sport activities.
In French this week, we started a new unit called "Going Shopping". We began by learning the names of different fruits, which we practised through a fun game of Corners! We then learned how to say whether we like or don't like a fruit. After that, we took it a step further and explored how to say if we like something a little or a lot. It was great to hear you all using your new vocabulary with confidence and enthusiasm!
In Science this week, we completed our end-of-unit check on separating materials. You had the chance to show everything you've learned about different methods like sieving, filtering, evaporation, and magnetism. It was fantastic to see how confidently you explained each process and applied your knowledge -- a great way to finish off a fun and fascinating topic!
Working in our groups this week, we sang our chosen song, added our actions to it and chose which notes we want to compose with.
In PE, you completed a carousel of cricket activities, which were originally shared with our year 6s by Crewe Vagrants Cricket Coaches. It included bowling, fielding and batting skills. You worked hard and showed fantastic focus on a very hot day.
In Geography this week, we learned about how we can help protect the Amazon Rainforest. We began by recapping why this incredible place is so important -- from producing oxygen to being home to millions of unique species. Then, we explored how charities, countries, communities, and even individuals like us can play a part in protecting it. We had great discussions about small actions we can take to make a big difference!
In our computing lesson this week, you got to dive deeper into selection by using the 'if... then... else...' structure in your programs. This helps your program decide what to do based on certain conditions. You also learned why it's important to keep checking conditions over and over again using repetition--kind of like double-checking to make sure everything's on track! You explored how the condition in your program picks between two possible outcomes, and then you got to write your own program that uses selection to make cool things happen based on those outcomes. Keep up the great work! You're building some awesome coding skills!
Hope you all have a fantastic weekend,
Miss Pennance
