Yesterday, Year 5 travelled back in time. We went back to the Victorian era for our theme day. I certainly felt like a time traveller because your costumes all looked wonderful. Thank you so much for working so hard on them. .

During the day, we experienced what life would have been like for a Victorian child who went to school. It was very strict! Did you know that you weren't even allowed to ask questions? That's crazy! We left the Victorian school behind and enjoyed making Victorian toys and playing Victorian games. In the afternoon, we made our own cup and ball game and we created a digital portrait of Queen Victoria. We had a fantastic day.Thank you for making yesterday so special year 5.

For the rest of the week, we continued to be busy bees and worked hard. In maths, Miss Griffiths has been busy teaching us all about improper and mixed number fractions. We learnt how to convert between the two and how to compare them. In English, we have finished reading the "The Hound of the Baskervilles". It was it thrilling to learn that Holmes and Watson uncovered the truth behind the feared hound – it was just a big black dog! Next, we also examined an extract from the original text, unpicking its meaning and atmosphere. Creating storyboards of key scenes helped us grasp the characters and events in the story better. We will then be using this knowledge to plan and write our own versions next week.

In R.E, we have came to the end of our unit of the holy books of world faiths. In the lesson, we shared what we had learnt about during the unit and used this knowledge to complete our Questful Maps; we considered what we found out that was similar and different about each of the whole texts.

In History, we came to the end of our unit and completed our End of Unit check. We discussed how 1837 was a big year for Crewe because it was the year when the railway station opened. We agreed that with the railway coming in, more people started moving here, and our population began to grow. This meant that lots of new homes, factories, and buildings needed to be built to support everyone. Can you imagine how different Crewe would be today if that station hadn't opened? In our writing, we concluded that the railways didn't just connect Crewe to other places; they turned our little town into a bustling hub of activity. It's pretty amazing to think about how much the railways influenced our community!

On Wednesday, it was time for Music and PE. In PE, you' spent some PE time this week preparing for the indoor athletics competition. In Music, we continued playing our ukuleles in music. The focus was to play the four tuned string notes – G, C, E and A. We then played these notes to 'My Dog Has Fleas.' We played them in their order, and strummed open strings twice after. We practised this with, and without a pick.

On Thursday, Miss Griffiths taught Science. We were taught all about air resistance and we started getting ready for a thrilling parachute experiment that we will be carrying out next week. We put on our prediction hats and made some educated guesses about which parachutes would perform the best. We can't wait for next week!

In Computing, we started our new unit which will be voyage into the world of video-making. Lights, camera, action! In our first lesson, we explored the basics and learned about 'talking heads,' 'close-ups,' and 'panning.'

I hope you're having a fab weekend,

MIss Pennance
