A spotlight arrived in our English lesson to illuminate clues and excite our imagination about our new book. We saw a cloak, golden stars, doves, a joker playing card and a white rabbit. The clues all lead us towards a performance tent. When we entered our classroom the following day, the entrance to the tent had appeared. We entered with our very own ticket and learnt more about the book – Leon and the Place Between. We have really enjoyed reading and unpicking the vocabulary and skills used within the vehicle text. We wrote our own character description of the amazing magician who appears in our story. We have then explored an example text and again explored the language and writer's skills used within this.
Measuring time is our new focus in Maths. We explored our knowledge to write key facts linking how many days in a week and year, the approximate number of weeks in a month, and the number of months in a year. We then learnt about converting between all units of time (hours, minutes, seconds). We have also learnt to convert between analogue and digital time from 12-hour to 24-hour clocks. At the end of the week, we answered word problems involving time.
We also enjoyed taking part in our whole class TT Rockstars battle.
In our Reading lessons, we have read more of 'The Wind in the Willows'. We enjoyed learning about the characters through small extracts from the book.
As scientists, we learnt what a conductor and an insulator are in an electrical circuit. Using our own circuits, we added a test material to check if it lets the electricity pass through. It was interesting to test objects made from more than one material. We shared our findings with each other which helped to inspire us further to create investigations.
In our RE lesson this week, we have continued on our unit of the Church but we are now learning about different world faiths. This week's lesson was focused on Judaism. We learnt about the key features of Jewish churches as well as the role of a Rabbi. We watched informative videos and explored pictures of different churches. Throughout the lesson, we reflected on the similarities and differences between Jewish churches and Christian ones.
Festival feast was the theme of Art this week. We have been given the opportunity to plan and make our own food sculptures. We looked as some inspirational pictures linked to the artists we had explored and chose the food that we would make. We then started by building the shapes for our food from a range of resources. Next week, we look forward to adding our modroc.
In Computing this week, we have learnt about modifying codes to change a sprite's actions. This was with sharks. We had to identify the repetition, change the actions of the sharks to forever codes and then add a new sea creature to the game.
We were very excited to discover this half-term's learning will be recorders! We haven't played the recorder for just over a year. We have been busy doing Young Voices and learning to play a brass instrument. This week we recapped the parts of the recorder, how to hold the recorder, how to blow into the recorder and how to play note B. We will soon get up to speed and continue our recorder learning journey.
In our second Science lesson this week, we learnt more about how sounds travel. We learnt about how they can travel through solids, liquids and gases. We also loved learning about how sound cannot be made in space because there are no particles! Using what we had learnt, we advised Mrs Chesters on how she can make sure the music room is quiet. We will continue to learn about ways to help with this next lesson.
We had a Money Matters lesson (as part of HeartSmart) provided by Nationwide this week. It was a pleasure to welcome staff from the bank to school to teach the children about the importance of money and the ways we can spend the money we have. We learnt about the differences between cash, digital money (like paying for things on our phones), debit cards, credit cards and online banking. The children thought about the pros and cons to each. Thank you for a fantastic lesson Nationwide!
