Dear parents and carers,

Happy Friday! It has been another amazing week and Y3 have certainly been letting their light shine!

In maths, we began the week by continuing with non-standard partitioning, using part-whole models to support our understanding. We then moved on to finding 10 and 100 more or less than a given number. A particular challenge was subtracting 10 from numbers with no tens in the tens column (for example, 304 – 10). To help with this, the children explored how 100 can be exchanged for ten tens, making subtraction easier. We used dienes in practical lessons to build strong, hands-on understanding before moving forward.

In English, we have been learning about conjunctions and how they connect ideas in a sentence. This work is helping us as we build towards writing our own approaching threat narratives. To inspire us, we read a dramatic text about a Space-Bat-Angel Dragon arriving on Earth and causing chaos. The children analysed the author's use of language and structure, thinking about the purpose behind these choices. We also used drama to explore characters from The Iron Man. The children created freeze frames and discussed how the Iron Man might feel and how others might perceive him. They generated fantastic vocabulary to describe him and began writing character descriptions by the end of the week.

In RE, we explored how Christians celebrate Harvest today. The children created storyboards to show a day in the life of a Christian during Harvest Festival. They learnt that Christians donate food to those in need, decorate the church with fruits and vegetables, sing Harvest songs, pray to show gratitude, and even plant trees as a sign of respect for all that God has given.

Our DT focus this week was castles. We recapped the different features of a castle and considered which 3D shapes would be useful for building strong structures. The children experimented with creating their own nets to build shapes, and by the end of the week had designed their very own castles. They are very excited to begin building them next week!

In Computing, we compared digital and non-digital devices. The children drew a picture on paper and then recreated it using an app on the iPads. We then discussed the strengths, challenges and limitations of each method.

This week in music, we recapped the parts of the ukulele and how they will help us. We learnt how to look after our ukulele, how to hold the ukulele when sat down and how to rest the ukulele on our laps.

This week was especially exciting as we started learning French for the very first time! We began by finding out where France is, learning about the French flag, and spotting some of France's most famous landmarks. We then started our first unit, Getting to Know You, by practising how to greet people in both formal and informal ways. The children thoroughly enjoyed walking around the classroom greeting each other in French -- it was a wonderful way to begin our language journey!

As geographers, our task was to think about what is included on our school address. We also included the country, continent, and hemisphere we live in. We worked hard on a coloured key to highlight our school address and used Google Earth to zoom out to see lots of these locations

Red, yellow, purple, blue, green--these are some of our favourite colours in Year 3! During wellbeing time, we talked about why we love these colours and what they mean to us. O

Who are your cheerleaders? In PSHE, we explored the word thankful and talked about the people we appreciate. We discovered that lots of people enjoy encouraging us and are part of our personal cheerleading squads. It was so lovely to learn more about the people we rely on. This links beautifully to our Bible quote: "Let us think about each other and help each other to show love and do good deeds." -- Hebrews 10:24

We have taken part in PE this week with both Coach Beth and Thrive developing our kicking skills and football.

New homework has been set on maths.com. Please could the children also start collecting cardboard boxes or junk from home to support us in making our own castles next week.

Wishing you a wonderful weekend,

Mrs Roney.
