This week Year Two have been wonderful writer, marvellous multipliers and food fanatics.
In Maths this week, you continued your journey in multiplication and division by learning how to multiply and divide by 10 and 5. You discovered that understanding your multiplication facts securely is essential for mastering division, as they are inverse operations. Your hard work and determination have really shown through, and I am so proud of how well you are applying your knowledge--keep it up, Year 2!
In spellings this week, you learnt the spelling rule of 'doubling the consonant and adding y' to make certain words into adjectives. You were able to read and spell words such as runny, foggy, boggy, happy. You were able to identify the root word and suffix, tell me how many sounds and special friends are in each word and you were able to write them into sentences.
In English this week, you continued exploring Grandad's Island, focusing on the SPAG target of prepositions. You learned that prepositions explain the location of something and applied this knowledge by examining a jungle scene from the story. You described where different animals were positioned using prepositions and even brought the scene to life through role play! Acting as Grandad, Syd, or the animals, you thought about the sounds of the jungle and the possible conversations between Grandad and Syd. This immersive experience helped you create a detailed setting description of Grandad, showing how much your writing skills are developing. By the end of the week, you had moved onto analysing your text. Well done, Year 2!
Today in Computing we learnt all about pictograms. First we made one showing our favourite colours using paper, glue and scissors. Then we used the iPads to create another pictogram showing our classes favourite fruits. Then we discussed which method we preferred and which gave us the clearest representation of our data.
In Science this week, you continued learning about life cycles and deepened your understanding that a life cycle is the series of changes a living organism goes through from birth to adulthood. You took part in an exciting hands-on activity, visiting different tables where you had to arrange life cycle stages in the correct order. This helped you visualize the process for various animals and plants. To complete your learning, you chose your favourite life cycle and carefully drew it in your books, showcasing your fantastic understanding. Well done, Year 2!
In DT this week, you revisited your knowledge of the food groups and explored which foods belong in each category. You discussed the importance of a balanced diet and how different foods contribute to keeping our bodies healthy. Using this knowledge, you designed your own balanced menu, carefully selecting a variety of foods to ensure it included all the essential food groups. Your menus were creative, well-thought-out, and demonstrated a great understanding of healthy eating. Well done, Year 2!
In art, you recreated Van Goughs’s art work of the poppy fields. You focused on using impasto to create thick lines. You also focused on using upward paint strokes to show that the grass was growing and used sideward strokes for your sky to show the clouds were moving. Finally, next week you will apply your choice of flowers using cotton buds.
In RE this week, we began our new unit on Easter celebrations. You explored a variety of Easter symbols and discussed their meanings. After listening carefully to the Easter story, you reflected on how these symbols connect to the events of the story. We discovered that the Easter egg represents the stone rolling away from the tomb on the day of resurrection, the crown of thorns symbolizes what Jesus wore when he was crucified, and lambs and daffodils are signs of new life. You showed a great understanding of these important symbols and their significance in the Easter story--well done!
You finished your learning of first aid this week by roleplaying how to treat a sting or a bite. You understood that a bite needs to have a dressing out over it so that it doesn't get infected. You then understood a sting needs an ice pack put on it as it will swell. You were fantastic first aiders and very considerate towards your patients.
In Geography this week, you began your exciting new topic on Kenya by exploring the question: Where is Kenya? You started by brainstorming different ways to find information, suggesting non-fiction books, Google, Alexa, maps, and atlases. Using our continent song, you identified that Kenya is in Africa, and with the help of an atlas, you located it in Eastern Africa. You also expanded your geographical knowledge by identifying a country in Northern, Western, and Southern Africa in your books. Your map skills and enthusiasm for learning were fantastic--well done!
In music this week, we were rather busy! We learnt all about the recorder. We learnt the names of each part and discussed and studied our recorders in pairs. We did this really well. We talked about rules when playing an instrument, just like we have previously. We can't wait to get started next week!
Today year 2 have worked on their bowling skills, remembering that in cricket it's important to keep a straight arm. Our partners crouched like wicket keepers with their palms facing the bowler and fingertips on the ground. Once perfected, we learnt how to strike a ball with a cricket bat off a tee. In PE with Miss Haynes, you focused on netball skills and you found out how to a chest push and how to do an volley overarm throw.
Even with all of this amazing learning you have also celebrated world book day. You were able to dress in your comfy clothes or as a book character. We got snuggly in our blankets and pillows and completed some world book day activities with each other and read our books.
Well done for working so hard this week Year Two. I am always so proud of you superstars.
Have a wonderful weekend and I will see you on Monday,
Miss Haynes
